"A Million Dreams" - The Greatest Showman

Class Overview

Language Arts: In LA this year we are going to be honing in on your already excellent reading, writing, listening, and communication skills. You will learn about different types of texts, what an author's purpose of writing is, and how to best understand what you're reading and express your own understanding.

Math: In math we will make sure that you can add and subtract those whole numbers at lightning speed! Then we will be learning how to make sure we are sharing the same amount of cookies and pizza with our friends (fractions) so that no one gets mad that others got more. And since you have a TON of friends and family, we need to make sure that you know how many pizzas and cookies to have ready (multiplication). Division is also a must if we're learning about multiplying! We will also learn about decimals, money, how big to make that garden mom's been wanting to put in the backyard- not to mention the shape (geometry). That project would be difficult if we didn't know how to measure distances and how to figure out how much dirt we need when the dirt package gives us grams instead of pounds (measurements). OY!!

Science: Organisms (animals and plants) and energy and wave patterns OH MY!! But we can't leave out the most AWEsome part: space!

Social Studies: We're going to learn about Utah this year! We'll dive into how Utah's many landscapes affect us (its inhabitants) and how we influence Utah! Yep! That's right....what we do has an impact on our environment. We'll learn about the groups of people who were already in Utah when Europeans came across the ocean. We'll also see how the many different people who came here in history interacted and made Utah what it is today. We'll also talk about how what we do has an impact on how Utah will be in the future including how we reach out to people in need to help our communities be better. And...of course...we're back to money and how it is used in our economy (how we buy and sell things we need).

WHEW!! So much to do with so little time! But we've GOT THIS!

Welcome to 4th grade!

About Ms. Kirkpatrick (that's me!) :)

I am so excited to be joining Early Light Academy this year! AND... I am SO excited to meet you and be your teacher (or your student's teacher-depending on who's reading this)! I grew up in Idaho and then went off to college here, in Utah, at BYU. I graduated with a 4 year degree in psychology then decided to go to Japan and teach English for a year. While I was there I asked myself some very important questions: "What are the most important things to me?" and "If I could do anything to help the world what would I do?" My answers lead me to YOU! I went back to school and got a masters degree in teaching just so I could come teach you!

My goal as your teacher is to make sure that you know just how important you and all of your wonderful skills and talents are and how they can be used in this world. And, of course, to teach you all the important things like math, English, science, and history that will help you take your awesomeness to the next level.

We will learn a lot this year, so get your steel-toed boots, safety goggles, and typing fingers ready! But most important: get ready to learn about yourself and what you can do to help create the world we're going to make.
