Science.
At Earlsmead Primary School we teach the Science knowledge and skills in the National Curriculum. We aim to develop and encourage children’s interest in finding out about and understanding the world around them in relation to Science. Our aim is that all children enjoy Science and that many will consider a future career in it.
In Year 5 children experience air resistance when learning about forces.
Children learn Science weekly from Early Years through to Year 6. Whenever possible lessons are practical, with artefacts, resources and equipment for experimenting. Science is linked to the children’s everyday lives and experiences, with key Scientific vocabulary explained and in constant use throughout lessons. Children are regularly given opportunities to investigate scientific questions and develop their experimenting skills. Key Scientific concepts are clarified and reinforced regularly with common misconceptions addressed. Every year there is a high profile Science Week where there are exciting experiments and challenges for all the children to take part in. Assemblies are regularly held with visitors explaining their careers in Science and the reasons why they would recommend them, broadening both the children’s knowledge and their aspirations.
Children know the importance of Science and see it as something they want to be involved in. They develop awareness of nature and the natural world around them so they value it and care about protecting it. They feel that studying Science at a higher level is an option for them and know they could have an interesting, rewarding career within STEM ( Science, Technology, Engineering, Maths).
Year 3 learning about the force of magnetism and how magnets attract and repel.
Year 5 learning how levers affect the force needed to lift a weight.
Year 6 learning how the digestive system works.
Year 2 planting bulbs to observe their lifecycle.
Year 4 experimenting with electrical equipment to create circuits.
