Earlsmead Primary School - PSHE Intent, Implementation and Impact Statement

Intent

At Earlsmead Primary school PSHE underpins all of our teaching practice. We believe that for students to be successful, lifelong learners, the personal, social, health and economic aspects of their learning are vital. We want our students to develop the skills that enable them to be emotionally literate and thrive in our constantly changing world. Our PSHE curriculum promotes the spiritual, moral, cultural, mental and physical development of pupils which will prepare them for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences they will have throughout their lives.

Implementation

PSHE at Earlsmead is implemented using the ‘Jigsaw’ scheme of learning which is fully in line with the National Curriculum and the statutory guidance on relationships education, relationships and sex education (RSE) and health education. The Jigsaw spiral curriculum builds learning each year providing consistent progression across the school. The aim of the programme is to 'prepare children for life, helping them to know and value who they are and understand how they relate to other people’. There is a strong emphasis on emotional Literacy, building resilience and nurturing mental and physical health. Lessons include mindfulness which allows children to advance their emotional awareness, concentration and focus.

PSHE is taught through six themes: Being me in My World, Celebrating Difference, Dreams and Goals, Healthy Me, Relationships and Changing Me. Learning in each topic takes place during weekly whole class lessons which explore the different themes. These themes are further embedded in all other lessons and our whole school ethos. Teachers are encouraged to be flexible and adaptive in their teaching, carefully considering the needs of their class and making adjustments where needed while still ensuring coverage.

We are members of The PSHE Association and use their carefully researched resources and training to further enhance our curriculum.

Impact

By the time our students leave Earlsmead our PSHE curriculum will have ensured they will have a strong respect for diversity and difference, and be able to recognise the importance of both in our society. They will have high-self esteem and be equipped with the skills to help them develop in and adapt to the world around them, evidenced through their participation in a range of pupil platforms such as Student Council and the Student Newsletter . They will be able to manage their emotions and understand how to look after their mental health and wellbeing.

Through our relationships, health and sex education children are able to recognise positive healthy relationships, feel confident in their bodies and understand the changes their bodies will go through during adolescense. Children will be empowered and understand the importance of consent in all areas of their lives and relationships.
