Physical Education @Earlsmead School

At Earlsmead School we recognise the importance of PE in our curriculum and we are committed to providing all our children with opportunities to engage fully in Physical Education, physical activity and school sport. We want to teach our children how to cooperate and collaborate with others as part of an effective team, understanding fairness and equity of play to embed life-long values. We offer a dynamic and varied program of activity to ensure that all children progress physically through a unique and fully inclusive Physical Education curriculum. Our curriculum aims to improve the well-being and fitness of all children, not only through the skills taught, but through the underpinning values and disciplines Physical Education promotes in a safe and supportive environment. We aim to deliver high quality teaching and learning opportunities that enable all children to achieve their personal bests.

The aim of our PE curriculum is to support and develop our children’s basic physical competencies, build confidence in their abilities and develop the foundations for a lifelong, physically active and healthy lifestyle.

Our aims and objectives in our teaching of Physical Education are aligned to the National Curriculum. We aim to ensure that all pupils:

  • Develop competence to excel in a broad range of physical activities

  • Are physically active for sustained periods of time

  • Engage in competitive sports and activities

  • Promote and develop opportunity to lead a healthy and active lifestyle

At Earlsmead Primary School Physical Education is an integral part of our curriculum and we strive to create a culture which aims to inspire an active generation to enjoy Physical Education and physical activity, who encourage each other and achieve.

In our Physical Education lessons you will see:

  • Opportunities for children to work independently and with others in pairs, small groups and teams.

  • Subject specific key vocabulary and key questions that build on previous learning throughout their time at Earlsmead Primary School.

  • Acquisition and development of knowledge and skills.

  • Selecting and applying knowledge and skills, tactics and compositional ideas.

  • Children evaluating and improving their own and others’ performances.

  • Children demonstrating their knowledge and understanding of fitness and health.

  • Our ambition is to provide our children with at least 2 hours of high quality physical education and physical activity every week.

  • Following the advice from the UK Chief Medical Officers, we encourage our children to aim for an average of 60 minutes of physical activity per day across a week. Our adult community are also encouraged to take part in at least 150 minutes of moderately intense physical activity per week.

  • Our long term planning overview sets out the Physical Education units which are to be taught throughout the year in order to ensure that the requirements of the National Curriculum are fully met.

  • Pupils participate in at least an hour long high quality Physical Education lesson each week. In addition to this session, children are encouraged to participate in the varied range of extra-curricular activities. Daily Mile, short burst sessions happen every day. Lunch time coach sessions are available each day and children can attend a rolling programme of fully inclusive after school sport and physical activity clubs throughout the academic year.

  • We have an external sports coach who works collaboratively with our teachers and staff. He works with classes to teach Physical Education whilst supporting an ongoing programme of staff CPD.

  • Active travel is always encouraged and we support a newly established school street. We work closely with our local authority and take part in Walk to School Week events.

  • Children are encouraged to stay active during their break times and can access a variety of equipment to support this.

  • Children across KS2 can become Play Leaders who receive specific training for this to support and develop their roles. The Play Leaders develop into sporting role models for our younger children, assisting with and organising games during lunch time.

  • Each year a small group of UKS2 children are invited to become Sports Leaders. They are sporting role models for the younger children who assist with lunchtime activity and support our annual Sports Festival and any other sporting activities across the school.

  • Children are invited to attend competitive sporting events and festivals within our own school setting, in our local authority area and beyond. This inclusive approach endeavours to encourage not only physical development but also mental well-being. These events also support and develop teamwork and leadership skills.

  • Children in UKS2 attend a programme of swimming and water safety sessions provided by our local authority. Sessions inform and impact on the data collected for Year 6 in relation to the annual Sports Premium reporting.

  • We aim for all Year 6 pupils to leave our school with the skills to competently and confidently swim at least 25m and have water safety life skills.

  • We provide opportunities for our children to participate in workshops covering a variety of new sports throughout the year. For example, ballet, boxing and skipping. They provide our children with opportunities to develop skills, improve their fitness and introduce them to new active experiences.

Our curriculum aims to improve the well-being and fitness of all children at Earlsmead Primary School, not only through the sporting skills taught, but through the underpinning values and disciplines Physical Education promotes. Our children are physically active, and this has a positive impact on their learning in their classrooms. We strive to motivate children to participate in a variety of sports through our quality teaching. From our lessons, our children learn and are encouraged to take responsibility for their own health and fitness. We hope that many of our children also enjoy physical activity and the success of competitive sports both within and outside of our school setting. We hope to equip our children with confidence and the necessary knowledge and skills to promote and build a love of sport for life. Through our teaching of Physical Education, we will provide opportunities for pupils to develop values and transferable life skills such as fairness and respect. We celebrate and share the sporting achievements of our children both in and out of school, so that we are promoting sports and physical activities, as well as celebrating all children's participation and success.

A measure of our impact is to motivate children to utilise all of these underpinning skills in an independent and effective way in order to live happy and healthy lives. Our children will grow up to live their happy and healthy lives that utilise the skills and knowledge acquired with us through Physical Education, physical activity and school sport.
