Hello, I am Prof. Dr. Marc Frincu. I joined the Computer Science Department within the Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science at the West University of Timisoara (UVT) as a full professor in Fall 2023. I also lead the Distributed Systems and Big Data lab within the Institute for Advanced Environmental Research (ICAM) at UVT. Prior to this, I was a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Computer Science, School of Science and Technology at Nottingham Trent University (NTU), UK.

I have a Ph.D. in Adaptive Scheduling for Distributed Systems (2011 from West University of Timisoara Romania) and have been a postdoc at University of Strasbourg France (2012-2013) and University of Southern California USA (2013-2015). At various points in my career, I have also visited INRIA Lille (2011) as a visiting scholar and worked as an intern at INRIA Nancy (2007-2008) in France. I also supervise doctoral students in Romania (habilitation since 2017).

My research topics include distributed systems and applied Big Data. Under their umbrella, I have researched machine learning for smart grids, heritage reenactment combining VR and cultural astronomy, digital humanities (focusing on machine learning for rare languages' OCR). I have led as PI/co-PI (local coordinator) 5 R&D projects funded by the Romanian Executive Agency for Higher Education, Research, Development and Innovation Funding (UEFISCDI) and the European Space Agency (ESA) totaling around 300,000 EUR. Furthermore, I have been PI for 2 grants about cultural projects around astronomy in culture outreach (8,000 EUR) funded by cultural and non-profit organizations in Romania and co-PI for 2 grants on cultural astronomy heritage funded by NTU through internal calls (25,000 GBP). For a list of papers, citations, and collaborators check my Google Scholar profile. Some of my synergistic activities can be found on my Web of Science profile.

I am an IEEE Senior member (since 2016) and a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (since 2022).

In addition, I am a fellow and secretary of the European Society for Astronomy in Culture (2023-2026; formerly its vice-president 2020-2023) and vice-president of the Romanian Society for Cultural Astronomy (2021-2024; after previously serving as its president between 2017-2021). Since 2024 I am also a member of the Europeana Network due to my work on digital heritage preservation.

I won the 2017 "Rada Mihalcea" Award for Young Researchers in Science in Engineering (3rd place) and the 2015 Outstanding Researcher Diploma by the "Orizonturi Universitare" Foundation.
