Virtual Field Trips

Explore the world around you with virtual field trips.

Geography

GeoGuessr - Let's explore the world!GeoGuessr is a geography game which takes you on a journey around the world and challenges your ability to recognize your surroundings.

Things to consider when playing GeoGuessr: vegetation, housing / buildings, signs, people, current street view locations, etc.


Example Activities: (activities acquired from www.edtechnut.com)

  • Have students compare and contrast the various locations.
  • Have students figure out the algorithm for points awarded. Example spreadsheet.
  • Have students use descriptive writing to describe the settings they see.


GeoSettr (http://geosettr.com/) is a free app that allows you to create your own location game within GeoGuessr.

  • As a teaser to the book, have students explore these five locations from The Outsiders.
  • Have students go through a GeoGuessr Biome Animal Challenge to identify animals that learn in various biomes around the world.
  • Challenge students to identify the common theme in this GeoGuessr Challenge (answer: all places President Ronald Reagan has lived)


Locatestreet is similar to GeoGuessr, but it is based on Google Street View.

Example Activity: Have students work in teams to complete the 20 tasks. Have the teams take screenshots of the locations and note what inferencing and critical thinking skills they used to determine the location.


Art

Art Movements - Google Arts & CultureExplore collections and stories from around the world with Google Arts & Culture.

Stroll through museums, zoom into examine brush strokes, compare works of art, and create your own gallery of preferred art.

  • Have students look at a painting (search for one or from this art collection). Choose one of the paintings to explore further. Write a summary of the painting and include details, such as name of artwork, artist, date created, museum, type of medium, etc.
  • Have students explore a museum and note what they see, what they wonder and what they feel.

  • Have students “fly” in using street view to imagine they are there in person.


Google Expeditions

Google Expeditions uses Google Cardboards or other VR headsets, to take students on an augmented reality trip around the world.

  • Take the students on a trip to show them an actual location they are studying.

Drag the little "yellow" person into an area to view the street view, photo sphere (panorama), or inside a building or under the water.

  • Allow students to take a trip to the actual locations they are reading and learning about.

Create Your Own Google Map

Create a Google Map

Create a virtual field trip through Google Maps. Add images and text to your locations.

  • How many miles would a bird fly if he traveled to all of the cities that have served as capitals of the US government since the signing of the Constitution? Create a Google Map showing your answer.
  • Have the students create a map that shows a historical event, path a character takes in a book, etc. Example: Constitutional Walking Tour and Civil War

Google Tour Builder

Google Tour Builder uses the technology of Google Earth to allow you to create tours around the world. Add text, images, and videos along the tour. Fly into the location using Google street view.

  • Have students create a tour based on a historical event, a character's travels (books about road trips), path of a historical figure, etc.

Google Lit Trip

Google Lit Trips uses Google Earth to take students on the journeys of characters from well known literature. Along the journey pop-ups will appear to help engage the student on their journey through the book.

  • Have the students explore the path taken by a character prior/during/after reading a book.
  • Have students create and submit a Google Lit Trip based on a book they have read.


International Space Station



This website allows students to explore the different areas of the International Space Station. It provides videos, text, and links to external resources to help educate on the various sections.

  • Put students into groups and assign a section to each group. Have each group become the expert of their section and then teach the rest of the class.

Hiking Mt. Everest

Little bit longer, and we would see Mount Everest in all its glory... And suddenly... It felt like someone's hit the breaks... We stopped and started slowly moving backwards. The wind! Pilot said. I can't go there, the wind is too strong...

Hike up Mt. Everest and explore the various points along the trail.

  • Have the students “travel” up the mountain and create a mock journal of their trip. Have them describe the scenery (sight, sounds, smells), the clothes they wearing, food they eating, etc.
  • Have students view 2nd helicopter ride between the Ankala and Kharte ridges, near Lukla; View 9th helicopter ride of Khumbu “Ice River.” Have students compare and contrast the two locations on the same mountain.

Google Sky

Google Sky is a feature for Google Earth and an online sky/outer space viewer. ... The application allows users to view a collaboration of images from NASA satellites, the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, and the Hubble Telescope. It is available on Android and can be used on a smartphone as an augmented reality application.
