Design Elements

Goodbye hot mess presentations! Hello effective, beautiful visuals. Brain studies indicate that key design elements can increase retention of information. Discover tips for creating well-designed presentations that effectively get your point across. Use this webpage to:

                  • Learn to create effective and attractive presentations.
                  • Practice improving design techniques on existing presentations.
                  • Understand why design is important.

Elements of Design

Layout

  • Avoid chaotic layouts
  • Use F-Pattern
  • Eliminate accessibility barriers

Typography

  • Limit number of fonts
  • Use sans serif fonts
  • Avoid unnecessary text effects
  • Use solid backgrounds for text


Color

  • Too much color is distracting
  • Use different hues of same color
  • Black/White create too much contrast
  • Complementary colors- red on green; blue on yellow, etc.

Visuals

  • Leave white space
  • Use grid alignment
  • Use real world images
  • Direct relation to content

Customize Color Palettes

Use links (each images is a link) below to assist with complimentary color choices for your presentations. With ActivInspire, you can customize colors. To re-create a color palette found by one of the links below do the following:

1. Take a screen shot of the color palette.

2. Paste this screen shot into your ActivInspire workspace.

3. Right click the color palette in ActivInspire.

4. Choose the eye dropper and select one of the colors on the screen shot.

5. Follow steps 1-4 for all of the other colors in the desired color palette.
