ActivInspire: Magic Ink

Use this webpage to understand layers in ActivInspire and how you can create flipcharts using Magic Ink and Magic Revealers. In order to use these features, we will also learn about locking, reordering and hiding objects.

Magic_Ink.flipchart
  1. Download flipchart by clicking on the title of the flipchart. (be sure pop-up blockers are allowed for google sites)
  2. Then select the download button.
  3. Use the flipchart to practice with magic ink. (the flipchart also has notes that give detailed instructions)

Layers

ActivInspire uses layering. The image on the left indicates the type of objects and the layer they typically reside in ActivInspire. They can be moved according to the need of the page.

Use layering to your advantage for an easy way to reveal.

If you need a review on how to lock, reorder or hide objects, please scroll to the bottom of this page.

The Object Browser (3rd icon) is the browser that shows the layers of the page.

In this example, the Frame, Magnifier and Magic Ink are on the top layer. These items are also grouped. As seen in the image on the right, the magnifier reveals the respiratory system that is in the middle layer. Note that the "Man" is in the top layer, while the respiratory system is in the middle layer. This is how you can use layering to reveal things in a lower layer.

Create a page to use Magic Ink to reveal

  1. In Design Mode, select two objects for your page. (Our video example is a lamp and circuit.)
  2. Resize the objects so one fits over or inside the other.
  3. Using the Object Browser, make sure the object you want revealed is on the "Middle Layer." (In this instance it will be the circuit.)
  4. Using the Object Browser, make sure the object that covers the other object is on the "Top Layer." (In this instance it is the lamp.)
  5. Lock both objects. (lamp and circuit) You can do this using the Object Browser. Select the object, then in the Locked column on the Object Browser, there is a menu to select. This menu allows you to lock the object. Do this for both objects.
  6. Drag the lamp on top of the circuit.
  7. Select the Magic Ink tool (Tools menu > Magic Ink) and click on the top of your top image (lamp). Color the lamp using the Magic Ink. You should be able to view through the top layer, which should now reveal the circuit.
  8. Switch back to the select tool.
  9. Move the Magic Ink spot around or delete it if you no longer want it to show.

Note: Locking the two objects is important so that students do not unintentionally move them and reveal what is beneath without the "magic". Do not lock the magic ink!

Create a Magic Revealer

Create a Magic Revealer:

  1. Get two objects to use to reveal object on middle layer. (Our example in the video is pond and what you find inside a pond.)
  2. Go to the Resource Browser and from Lesson Builder Tools folder, select Gadgets and pick a gadget such as the magnifying glass or spectacles. (Create your own by using the shape tool.)
  3. Move the revealer to the "Top Layer" in the Object Browser.
  4. Using Magic Ink (tools icon>magic ink), click and hold as you color the lens of the revealer. (It is helpful to lay the "Magic Revealer" over the item to be revealed, so you can see the whole area that needs to be colored in using the Magic Ink on the Magic Revealer.)
  5. Make sure the magic ink is listed below the revealer on the Top Layer in the Object Browser.
  6. Group the revealer and magic ink together. (This can be done in Object Browser by ctrl+click each item then click on grouping tool in marquee toolbar.)
  7. Now it is ready to use.

Lock, Reorder and Hide

Lock an object:

  1. Select the object.
  2. Click on the Object Edit Menu.
  3. Select Locked.

Reorder an object:

  1. Select the object.
  2. Click on the Bring Forward (or Send Backward) button until the object is on the desired layer.

Hide an object:

  1. Select object to tap on to hide or unhide target object.
  2. Open the Action Browser.
  3. Find and select Hidden action.
  4. Under Action Properties select the target object, by clicking on the 3 dots next to the box.
  5. Click Apply Changes.
