Coyote Concert Band

1st Period 8:00 - 8:50am




Overview: This class will provide experiences and develop skills that are specific to participation in a musical ensemble.


By the end of this course students will be able to: identify proper stage etiquette, perform multiple pieces of music that incorporate multiple musical genres, perform music using appropriate stylistic nuances, identify multiple musical scales and key signatures, identify multiple time signatures, as well as be able to identify and perform emotive musical devices that are employed in western music.


Needs and Resources


Required Background: Students must maintain academic eligibility in order to participate in school functions. Prior experience with playing an instrument and reading music is encouraged but not required to participate in this course.


Required Materials: The materials needed for this course can be provided by the school if the student requires. These materials include:


  • Musical Instrument
  • Essential Elements 2000 Book 1
  • Essential Elements 2000 Book 2
  • Step by Step Band Method
  • Music that is to be performed throughout the length of the course.

Policies and Procedures



General Rules:


  • Students are expected to have the materials they need for class, including a pencil, and be ready to play within the first 3 minutes of the period.
  • Students are to participate to the best of their ability during each class period and performance.
  • Students are expected to demonstrate respect for their teacher, classmates, and school property.


Grading Policies:


  • Daily Participation Points: Students will be given 5 participation points for each period of class. Students that are prepared for class on time and fully participate will earn full credit for the day. Deductions will be made to daily participation points for violations of general class rules. Absences will result in a loss of all 5 participation points for the day. If students are aware of days that they will be absent and communicate their situation with Mr. Maki, they may still receive participation points at the discretion of Mr. Maki.
  • Concert Grading Policy: An unexcused failure to participate in a concert performance (no call/no show) will result in a 2 full letter grade drop in a student’s grade. Excusing students from performances is left to the discretion of Mr. Maki. Furthermore, students will be required to make up concert absences by completing other appropriate band related assignments in order to earn credit for a concert absence.


Grading Scale:


  • Participation Points: 70% of total grade
  • Concert Performance: 30% of total grade
