Tournament Week 2024

Cricket

The DHS 1st XI qualified for Gillette Cup which is a tournament between the best 10 cricket schools in Otago.

In the first game of the tournament, Dunstan took on powerhouses Wakatipu in a 20 over Match. This team consisted of a bunch of Otago representative cricket players and also a NZ U19 Cricketer. Despite having Wakitipu down 2 wickets for no runs in the first over, plus a fighting effort with the bat, we just fell short of their target. The highlight of the game however was Jake O'Connell's ball to "future blackcap" Hugo Bogue, which saw an amazing catch taken by Alex Scott on the boundary.

The afternoon game saw Dunstan take on Taieri in another 20 over match. This game however things didn't go to plan. After a tough innings in the field, Dunstan were set a mammoth total of 178 runs to win. Which would prove to be too much for the boys, as in the end we fell well short losing 6 wickets for 110 runs. Shoutout goes to Jake Crosbie, being the teams highest run scorer in this game compiling a solid 31 runs.

On day two the boys were rested and raring to go for a 50 over match against rivals Mt Aspiring College, who had tipped up Dunstan the year before. After losing the toss the boys were put into bat, setting a solid score of 147 on the back off Reuben Love's 31 and Taine Morgan's 20. The boys got off to a dicey start bowling, with a few extras in the early overs. However on the back of some outstanding bowling from Bradley Shaw who took 5 wickets for only 25 runs, Dunstan were able to knock MAC over for 77. Along with the outstanding bowling, the highlight of the game was Mitchell Mcnally's bullseye of a throw from 30 metres away knocking over the stumps to complete a run out and finish the game off.

After a big night out at the Lone Star, the boys were ready to finish the tournament off with another win in another 50 over game. The only thing standing in the way was opponent Taieri.  After being put into bat first the boys struggled to put runs on the board with the constant loss of wickets, however through some power hitting from Alex Scott, Compact Batting from Reuben Love, and a late contribution from Roxburgh boy Caleb Darling, the boys set 150 to win. Despite a fighting effort in the field, and a late flurrish of wickets Taeiri would prove to be too strong. Winning the Match by 4 wickets. The highlight of the game being Jake Crosbies 4 Wickets with the ball.

I personally would like to thank Adrian Morgan for coaching the team on the tournament, and Manager Nathan Love for organizing everything behind the scenes. A special shoutout also goes to Lindsay Scott for coaching the second day. Thanks to all the parents and supporters for getting behind the boys in this tournament. Next target is the McCullum Cup on Labour weekend.

On March 19th 15 paddlers left to travel to Kawerau in the North Island for the national secondary schools canoe slalom champs.

The first stop was kayaking the Kaituna river in Rotorua. The highlight of the paddle is dropping off a 7m waterfall.

After 2 days of training, the 3 day event began.

Overall there were 550 race starts during the 3 days, with events ranging from K1, C1 and  C2 paddling.

The grand finale was the boater x. This is an event where 4 paddlers battle it out at the same time to be the fastest down a series of rapids whilst navigating hanging poles and completing a roll.

After all the heats and the final, Ollie Goldsmith took out the boater x event in style. Ollie also won the U18 K1 race and placed in several other events. Ollie and a Tauranga Boys College paddler placed first  equal for the event as best paddlers.

It was wonderful to see the DHS team perform so well in what was a very competitive field.

Thank you to the parents who supported our athletes on the trip. Ian and Kirsten Knights, Aimee McCutcheon, Kaylee McNally and Karen Meissel - you were all outstanding.

siss mountain biking Champs at Cornet peak

Dunstan had 18 students competing in the South Island Schools MTB Champs at Coronet Peak from the 20-23rd of March. Out of the 5 male champions in the 5 age groups, Dunstan had 3 of these. Cooper Millwood was 3rd in the XC, 3rd in the DH and 2nd in the Enduro to be U20 boys SI champion. He has now left DHS go to working and then racing in Europe so we wish him well and hope one day he can make a living riding his bike.

Jack Sole was 9th in the XC, 4th in the DH and 4th in the Enduro to be U17 boys SI champion.

Ryker Thow was 4th in the XC, 3rd in the DH and 1st in the Enduro to be U15 boys SI champion.

Just as pleasing as the overall winners were lots of students in Year 9 and above who had their first taste of school racing. These included Greer and Theo Bennett, Liam Broome and Liam Jones, Korey Hunt, Charlie Tait and Murphy Watt, and Samuel Ruetter. Also racing were Ted Cuthbertson, Maddy Mannix and William Miller.

Unfortunately, this will be the last Souths for Hailey Petrie and of course Cooper Millwood.

Not so lucky were Cam Moir who crashed out in DH practice and sprained his wrist and Marko Hubber who crashed on Rude Rock in the Enduro and broke his collar bone.

Dunstan ended up 9th best school in the South Island.
