Rationale:
Respecting the Right to Play is about meeting a standard of respect, personal excellence and attendance to be eligible to play for one of our flagship teams. (Top Sports Teams)
This means that students that are in one of our flagship teams must have an unjustified absence rate lower than 10% throughout the year to be eligible to play. It also means that these students must have a fortnightly reporting GPA of 6 or higher. (a 3 is described as being ‘fair’ for respect and personal excellence), during the playing season.
So how will this work?
Each fortnight on a Friday (Week 2, 4, 6 etc) Todd Adams (Head of Sport) will filter through the fortnightly GPA to check that all of our flagship team players are above the standard. If someone is below expectation the following will occur on the following Monday.
Head of Sport will inform the TIC of the concern
Head of Sport will notify the Coach, Parent and Player - this is likely to be via email letter outlining the concern and level they are at. At this point the player is ‘on notice’. This means that in the next reporting period the grades/attendance must be above expectation or the player will be ineligible to play. This gives the Coach 2 weeks notice that there is a possibility that the player may be unavailable.
Should the player be made ineligible, then they miss 1 game. They may play the following week before the next round of reporting comes through (fortnightly). Should the grades still be below expectation the process repeats. Continued low grades may result in further ineligibility to play or withdrawal from the team.
Students that become ineligible to play during the season for their flagship team for not ‘respecting the right to play’ will become ineligible for a blues or bars award in that sport.
Students that are ‘stood down’ from school for behavioural issues may become ineligible to play and or practise for school sports teams if the stand down applies over the practice / game times.
Students are able to check their own attendance. As Attendance is taken from the beginning of the Year for the whole year, monitoring of this can be done in Whanau ora time and through the parent or student portal. Students above the 10% unjustified absence will be notified by email when it is confirmed that they are in a flagship team, and receive fortnightly feedback on this.
