Citizen Science is scientific data and observations collection performed by the everyday people in your community. The data becomes part of a bigger ongoing scientific research project!
Why does it matter?
Community Engagement
Being a citizen means being an active member of a town, school, family, organization.
The science occurring around the world impact what happens in your neighborhood, so you should get to be a part of it!
Current Science
Citizen Science projects support a greater scientific study currentlyhappening.
Dunes Learning Center has projects that are focused on topics like animals, plants, climate, phenology, and pollution.
Tackling Big Issues
Scientists are often studying very big and complicated issues (like climate change , habitat loss, cancer) . They do not have time to travel all over the world to conduct research in each area this impacts.
Citizen Science programs allow you to help them gather data from your location-meaning you are better represented!
Success of Citizen Science
We all bring different experiences and perspectives. The more people from different places working together means we have a greater pool of unique, new ideas!
Citizen Science is a project-based learning program developed to connect students with their community!
Citizen Science with Dunes Learning Center is composed of 6 steps:
Step 1: Learn about your Project
Step 2: Collect Data
Step 3: Upload Data
Step 4: Research and Publication
Step 5: Citizen Science Symposium
During our Zoom visit, we will go in much more detail and you can ask the Dunes Learning Center Staff questions.
There are several projects to choose from based on your interests and time restraints. Read our brief profile of one of them on the next page!
