Dams are a barrier created to hold back water and create a reservoir/pool in a water system.
Some animals build these as part of the natural environment.
Humans do too, but as an impact on the natural environment.
Human Dams
Generate energy, supply water, control flooding
Concrete, Iron
Enormous Scale
Prevents flooding, source of renewable energy, disrupts environment
Beaver Dams
Create habitats and lodges
Wood, Mud
Small Scale, but can be long and tall
Creates more wetlands, increases risk of flooding, makes more habitat for other organisms
As you can see by the dam comparison, humans take things to the extreme! This means the natural environment is greatly impacted (negatively), and the system is out of balance.
