What are we learning in January?
Math 8 will start Q3 off with some fun Probability! We will be able to watch The Price is Right, and find the probability of different contestants winning. This will lead into the rest of the unit.
Math 8 is learning about slope and slope-intercept form! We will spend some of January reviewing slope from seventh grade, and going one step forward into slope-intercept form! We will be writing equations, graphing, and connecting slope-intercept form to real world situations!
In history, students are studying the the impact George Washington had on our nation as the first president. Students are looking at the many precedents set by Washington that set the tone for the nation's future. Students will also spend some time learning about some of Washington's key advisors and how their differing viewpoints ultimately led to the development of political parties. After Washington, students will spend some time looking at the impact that John Adam's presidency had on the nation, specifically studying the XYZ Affair and the Alien & Sedition Acts.

In Honors English 8, students are wrapping up Call of the Wild before moving on to our non-fiction unit that focuses on a variety of speeches and a dramatized version of The Diary of Anne Frank.

We will also be working on the 100 SAT Words vocabulary unit. These are mainly words from literature selections read in 7-12.

In English 8, students are beginning the non-fiction unit which includes a variety of selections of speeches and, later, a dramatized version of The Diary of Anne Frank. We are also reviewing the structure and organization of different types of essays.

In Science 8, Students are currently learning about atoms, subatomic particles, and the law of conservation of mass. This is the second of two units devoted to chemistry in the eighth grade. During our study, we will do several lab activities where students observe and measure the effects of chemical reactions and how mass is conserved in those reactions. This is all a part of Unit 6, and we will conclude our study of chemistry with a unit test in the early part of February.

Algebra 1 is getting into Unit 5: Polynomials. We will learn how to classify, add, subtract, multiply, divide, and factor polynomials! This unit will continuously be referred back to throughout the rest of their high school Math career, so this is a big unit for us to really dive into!

Students will soon begin the module, "Melanin" which will integrate various biology topics as part of the storyline. Primarily, students will learn about pedigrees, karyotypes, and how mutations can cause changes in DNA that cause various genetic conditions. Additionally, students will learn in detail about the synthesis of proteins and how mistakes in that process affect the traits of living things. Students will be studying these topics throughout the month of January and beyond.

January 20 -- Martin Luther King Jr. Day - NO SCHOOL
January 30 -- CTE Career Fair
Students should always have a charged iPad, as well as their charger, at school each day.
Headphones of any kind are not to be worn in the building unless permitted by the teacher.
Students should keep their phone put away in lockers at all times.
