HOLIDAY GIVEBACK
GMS Families:
In the spirit of the holidays, Grizzell Middle School is looking to sponsor 3 Celtic families in hopes of providing a nice Christmas to some people in need. Attached is a sign up genius for one of these families. If you would be interested in helping out, please open the sign up and choose an item or two that you would like to donate. You may drop the item off at any time to our main office labelled 6th grade. If you plan on wrapping the item, please make sure that you attach a sticky note to the outside with a description. So that our donors can remain anonymous, the setting on the genius will not show your name when you sign up for an item. We would love to have all items here at Grizzell by Friday, December 18th. Our staff will also be contributing to all three families in hopes of spreading some holiday joy. New items were added to the list.

DCS VIRTUAL CALMING ROOM
Need a brain break? Need a place to virtually chillax and zone out for a few minutes?
Take a moment to check out our DCS Virtual Calming Room. You will find live animal cameras, online coloring books, and visual relaxation videos, to name a few.
Cameras and Google Meet - Please encourage your student to turn on the camera on Google Meet during classes. It is difficult to know if a student is on task or is understanding the material when the camera is turned off. Google Meet is releasing a new feature to blur the background that is being pushed out through the next few days.
If your family is experiencing hardship, please see THIS FLYER with information about support available within the Dublin community.
Our mini lessons this week focused on our Curiosity research projects. We learned a note-taking strategy and we discussed strong inquiry questions. Students are choosing a genre to share their findings for their project. Their choice genre is due Wed. Dec. 16th. Next week we will be working on Holiday greeting cards for nursing home residents.
We continue to work on our Passion Projects. Research has finished and now we are creating our projects. I hope to post them on my site so everyone can see them over the winter break. We are also going to create Holiday cards or How are you doing cards for the Convalarium of Dublin. We want to spread kindness to our neighbors who will be missing their families this holiday season.
Goal beginning now and into our 2nd semester: To understand the concept of a ratio and use ratio language to describe a relationship between two quantities. For example, "The ratio of wings to beaks in the bird house at the zoo was 2:1 because for every 2 wings there was 1 beak." Another example is "For every vote candidate A received, candidate B received nearly 3 votes."

We've been practicing to make a class recording of some Brazilian music entitled Miudinho this week as well as a special topic with a guest speaker on Thursday and Friday centered around the Tuskegee Airmen and music of WWII. The students asked great questions! Next week we will be recording our chosen instrument parts to create a class recording of Miudinho will finish our last week with a special music quest and open mic. The students have been truly amazing and wonderful this quarter and I have enjoyed working and learning with them so much!
This week we wrapped up our study of music theory and learned the notes of piano keyboard. Students had fun collaborating with friends in breakout rooms using Chrome Music Lab shared piano. We will wrap up our quarter next week, with talking about our own musical cultural connections and students will be researching and sharing music of their family's culture.

The students spent the week exploring the differences among unicellular, multicellular, animal cells, and plant cells as well as learning about the different organelles and their functions. They began creating diagram posters of an animal cell and a plant cell on Friday. The posters are due Tuesday, December 15. Students will continue their cell unit by exploring mitosis and symmetry next week. All Science work needs to be completed and submitted by Thursday, December 17.

We are continuing to read Iqbal as a class to focus on child labor. Our focus for the unit is: The choices people make have both present and future consequences. The evaluation of choices is relative and may differ across individuals and societies. The students are having insightful discussions in class about child labor and how it is impacting Iqbal and his friends.
We just finished up our study of ancient Egypt. We are now exploring migration and the reasons people move to other countries. Sometimes people leave a country due to political, environmental, or economic factors. Other times people are drawn to move into a country to unite with family members or for a better job or education. We will see how these moves impact both the countries that are left as well as the countries that are entered.
