DCS VIRTUAL CALMING ROOM
Need a brain break? Need a place to virtually chillax and zone out for a few minutes?
Take a moment to check out our DCS Virtual Calming Room. You will find live animal cameras, online coloring books, and visual relaxation videos, to name a few.
Cameras and Google Meet - Please encourage your student to turn on the camera on Google Meet during classes. It is difficult to know if a student is on task or is understanding the material when the camera is turned off. Google Meet is releasing a new feature to blur the background that is being pushed out through the next few days.
If your family is experiencing hardship, please see THIS FLYER with information about support available within the Dublin community.
In reading, we discussed the difference between main idea and theme. We also worked on summarizing with incorporating a theme. Ask your child about the summarizing strategy we learned. Our mentor text, Emmanuel's Dream, tells the true story of Emmanuel's Ofosu Yeboah who was born with a disabled leg. He rode his bicycle hundreds of miles across Ghana to advocate for people with disabilities and prove that, with determination, you can achieve your dreams. Ask your child to share his/her thoughts on the story. We are wrapping up revisions on our narratives which will be due by Tuesday, Nov. 24. Next week we'll be focusing on gratitude and thankfulness in our ELA lessons.
We are finally coming to an end with our Personal Narrative Unit. We have discussed pacing, dialogue, description, transitions and more. Class time has been allotted for working on our narratives, so we will be ready to turn them in early next week. We continue to look for signposts in our independent reading books in order to show our understanding of the six fictional signposts. Next week, we will be focusing on thankfulness in our lessons.
In my independent reading group we've been listening to the book, Other Words for Home by Jasmine Warga. It is about a young girl named Jude who has to flee her home country of Syria, along with her mother, during unrest in order to save her unborn brother. The students are loving it...P.S. She's an Ohioan.
We have finished our exploration of fractions through multiplying and dividing. Our next topic will focus on decimals. We will build on prior knowledge of volume, area, and decimal operations. We will then introduce to the language of prisms and pyramids so that distinctions can be made as students engage in discussions of volume and surface area.

Students are working hard finishing their underwater sea artworks emphasizing depth and dimension. The finished piece is due Monday, November 23rd. Next week we will begin looking at pastry artwork by artist, Wayne Thiebaud, and discuss how to design our own 3D pastry display artworks.
Students are designers and creative thinkers as they plan out their functional 3D artwork. They are coming up with ways to repurpose, reuse and recycle things all around them.
In this unit students have been challenged to work with recycled and natural materials to create a functional artwork. Ask your student about the Samsung “Out of the Box 2020” competition.
We continued our study of how music connects us this week by writing radio plays using music from different cultures. The students did a wonderful job of writing a story and including music and sound effects to help tell their story. Next week we will focus on music from the 1940s and have a special guest!
We had another fun week of drumming! This week, we learned the song Take Time In Life from Liberia and the students were able to use the breakout rooms to play the different parts together! It was nice to hear them interact and actually get to make music together even if they were in their own houses. We also learned about a Puerto Rican style of music called Plena and did some improvising.
We will use our short week next week to learn about Blues and they will be writing their own 12 Bar Blues song lyrics.
This past week in Cog ED, we learned even more Coding skills. We learned how to create headings and lists on our webpages, and how to include images in our HTML code. We also used a great 3D program called Tinkercad to complete a futuristic creativity challenge. Ask your student what they created!
Next week, we'll be working on some fun word puzzles and learning how to "debug" our HTML code.
The students wrapped up our Rocks Unit this week and began exploring soil. On Monday, our scientists will investigate soil in a lab activity. To participate in the activity, students need a sample of soil, a plate, and a magnifying glass or a mobile device.

The students will continue to try and escape from the Rocks and Minerals Escape Room. Then, on Tuesday, we will be discussing proper table etiquette heading into the holiday season.
On Tuesday, KMS and GMS RLA 6 students will prepare for the Thanksgiving holiday with a dining etiquette lesson in their Science class. Students will need a fork, a knife, a spoon, a plate, a cup, and a napkin. They will also need a small amount of play doh or clay or a piece of bread or something similar so we may discuss how to cut food.
Students will continue to learn and understand world governments through a variety of challenges and role playing/ reenactments. An assessment over this unit will be on November 24th.
*In December, we will begin reading Iqbal by Francesco D'Adamo (Author), Ann Leonori (Translator). The students will NOT need to have a copy, but they are welcome to purchase the book to follow along in class.
We will be completing our unit over the ancient civilizations of Mesopotamia. We are having a "Quick Check" on Tuesday, Nov. 24th. There will be no homework over Thanksgiving Break. Have a wonderful Thanksgiving!
