RLA HELP DESK
GMS and KMS teachers are offering a Help Desk to assist students with their asynchronous work during our Ohio State Test days.
GMS - Mrs. Nyikes will be available at 8:00 - 11:00 AM and 1:15 - 2:45 PM
OHIO STATE TEST REMINDERS:
Monday, April 12 - State Math Test - Part 1
Tuesday, April 13 - State Math Test - Part 2
The pick up time for our RLA students taking the Mathematics test is 10:30.
Remote Learning Students will need to report to school to test. If this isn't possible, please make sure you have connected with the main office to let them know.
There will be NO RLA SYNCHRONOUS CLASSES ON TESTING DAYS. Students will be given asynchronous work to complete after taking the tests, but no "live" instruction will happen on testing days.
Students need to make sure their Chromebook is updated prior to testing . Here are directions for how to do this: Updating a Student Chromebook; Social Studies teachers will be walking students through this process in class.
Students may be signed out and picked up by their parents at the completion of testing. Both Grizzell and Karrer will be sharing details about how this process will look through the principal's communication.
The approximate time for pick up will be around 10:30-11:30 on testing days; look for a more specific time to be shared after spring break.
Students who remain at school for the entire school day will have lunch after testing and then will be in a study center setting with some of the RLA staff to complete their asynchronous work.
Remember to get a good night’s sleep and eat a good breakfast on testing days!
What to bring on testing days?
Charged Chromebook - All OSTs will be done online, so please make sure the Chromebook is charged and ready for each day. It may be a good idea to also bring a charger just in case.
Calculator - There will be one built into the math portion of the test (and science if the problem warrants), but students may also choose to bring their own calculator; students may NOT use their cell phone as a calculator
Lunch - Although the school will continue to provide free breakfast and lunch, your child may choose to bring something from home.
Cell Phone - If a student needs to bring their cell phone to school for testing, it will need to be turned off and unavailable during the testing session. If it is needed to coordinate a ride after the testing session, that will be permitted.
Headphones - Students may bring wired (not bluetooth, so no AirPods) headphones to have the test read out loud to them. Since they will be using their district provided Chromebook, as long as the headphones can plug into the Chromebook, they will be fine.
Something Non-Electronic to Do after the Test - In the chance that the student finishes the test before the testing session is over, they may want to have a book to read or something non-electronic to do after finishing. They will not be able to use their Chromebook, cell phone, or any other digital device after testing.
KMS MARCH PET MADNESS
Thank you all of our KMS students and staff for registering their pets and for voting.
KMS POP TAB DRIVE
Karrer MS Student Council is sponsoring our annual pop tab drive April 7, 2021 - April 21, 2021 . Please bring your pop tabs to school and place them in the boxes on the bookshelf near the front door by the main office. All pop tabs will be donated to the Ronald McDonald House. Let's pull together to make a difference!
CHROME BOOK - SHUT DOWN
Please log out and SHUT DOWN your Chromebook and not just close it at least once a week.
Let it remain shut down for at least 1 hour or even better while you sleep tonight.
The shut down allows the computer to update itself so it runs more efficiently.
DCS VIRTUAL CALMING ROOM
Need a brain break? Need a place to virtually chillax and zone out for a few minutes?
Take a moment to check out our DCS Virtual Calming Room. You will find live animal cameras, online coloring books, and visual relaxation videos, to name a few.
Cameras and Google Meet - Please encourage your student to turn on the camera on Google Meet during classes. It is difficult to know if a student is on task or is understanding the material when the camera is turned off. Google Meet is releasing a new feature to blur the background that is being pushed out through the next few days.
If your family is experiencing hardship, please see THIS FLYER with information about support available within the Dublin community.
Students examined how an author uses point of view to develop the perspective of the narrator or speaker in a text. Students analyzed a poem to look at how the point of view of the speaker influenced the perspective within a poem. We also reviewed figurative language and practiced identify examples from song lyrics. Next week we'll begin exploring argument writing.
Some of us have begun working on our argument projects while some of us have begun working on reading for their book clubs. Students will be choosing their argument topic from the following list of four: single-gender education, cellphones in schools, social networking for school and junk food in schools. Students who have chosen book clubs voted on their books before spring break and should have them in their hands now. We are excited to get into both projects: argument and book clubs.
Students continue to write and evaluate algebraic expressions. Students will be introduced to the Cartesian coordinate plane which includes all four quadrants. The first quadrant should be a review from 5th grade. They will begin plotting points given ordered pairs, the x- and y-coordinates, as well as write the ordered pairs based on points on the coordinate plane.
Remember that asynchronous work is given on 4/7, 4/8, 4/12 and 4/13 due to OSTs in ELA and Math.

This week, we studied how Google Search works and how Google displays its answers. On our asychronous days, students worked on Code.org and their website in HTML. We looked at expanding and narrowing our searches by choosing our terms. Next week, we continue our work with searching and Code.org.
This week we learned about the cyberbullying and how we can deal with digital drama. We also took a look at copyright and how it is used in our digital world. Next week we will be wrapping up our digital citizen unit and will be having an open note test, there is a study guide on schoology. After, we will start our new coding unit. I am looking forward to it! Have a great weekend.
This week we started our racquet sports unit and we are learning everything tennis which is my passion! I hope the kids who have never played before will get to the courts and try it out now that they know what the lines mean and how to keep score! GMS RLA PE is taking it outside on Friday, April 23 from 5-8pm. We will be playing pickleball and cricket, more information to come in the newsletter from Mr. Wilkinson! Go Celts!
I am very proud of the effort every student put into class this week! This week we started our Targeting Unit. Students learned how to throw overhand properly and completed activities that helped improve their form and throwing accuracy. Next week, we will continue with this unit and compete against classmates in mini accuracy challenges!

Next week we have more testing (Math) on Monday and Tuesday. In Science we will be finishing up our unit on Energy with a quiz on Wednesday (4/14). We will then spend some time taking a look at different scientists throughout history and the impact some of their studies/inventions/developments have had on society.
This week, the students learned about ancient Egyptian accomplishments/ inventions. Next week, we will be learning about ancient Egyptian pharaohs and their contributions to ancient Egypt.
We are continuing to take a look at life around the world. How do we compare with people living in other countries? One way we will make some comparisons is by using a site called Dollar Street. This site shares pictures of family life from around the world.
