CHROME BOOK - SHUT DOWN
Please log out and SHUT DOWN your Chromebook and not just close it at least once a week.
Let it remain shut down for at least 1 hour or even better while you sleep tonight.
The shut down allows the computer to update itself so it runs more efficiently.
DCS VIRTUAL CALMING ROOM
Need a brain break? Need a place to virtually chillax and zone out for a few minutes?
Take a moment to check out our DCS Virtual Calming Room. You will find live animal cameras, online coloring books, and visual relaxation videos, to name a few.
Cameras and Google Meet - Please encourage your student to turn on the camera on Google Meet during classes. It is difficult to know if a student is on task or is understanding the material when the camera is turned off. Google Meet is releasing a new feature to blur the background that is being pushed out through the next few days.
If your family is experiencing hardship, please see THIS FLYER with information about support available within the Dublin community.
We are continuing to learn about young activists. This week we learned more about the Birmingham Children's March of 1963 by looking at primary sources and viewing a brief video clip explaining the historic event. With these resources and our mentor text from last week, The Youngest Marcher, students studied the author's purpose of each text and used evidence from the text to support their thinking (RI.6.6 Determine an author's perspective or purpose in a text and explain how it is conveyed in the text.) *Please remind your child to complete and submit all assignments in Schoology.
Word Study has begun and will continue throughout the rest of the school year. We have decided to dedicate Wednesday to Word Study...calling it Wordy Wednesday (thank you to a fourth period student for the name). We have learned about sentence stems and introducing quotes into our writing and will be using what we learned as we continue through the process of researching and writing about our teen activist. Cannot wait to show you our finished product!
With the shortened week we will continue our exploration of percents by focusing on these essential ideas:
The hundredths grid can be used to represent a fraction, decimal, or percent.
To write a fraction as a percent, scale up or down to an equivalent fraction with a denominator of 100, if possible. (This will support our understanding of proportions)
A benchmark percent is a percent that is commonly used, such as 1%, 5%, 10%, 25%, 50%, and 100%.
Percent problems involve three quantities: the part, the whole, and the percent.
When calculating the whole, given the percent and the part, write the percent as a fraction with a denominator of 100 and set it equal to the part over x. Then solve for x. (This will be a main focus as we move into unit rates)

This week we learned about a method to evaluate information to combat disinformation online. Next week we will talk about databases and talk about copyright and the importance of citing your sources
Thanks for being flexible this week as we have been dealing with some inclement weather. We have been working on using HTML and have begun using CSS to help us style our code. Next week we will be continuing to use code.org and work our way through lessons 7 and 8 as we learn about web development.
Hi! FYI: On snow days I have been posting optional workouts for your kids to do! Hopefully they are helping you shovel the driveway as well, it is great exercise!
We have finished our Pickleball unit! I do hope your kids get out and try it when our weather improves! The Dublin Rec Center has courts and equipment, Library Park in Powell has two permanent courts, and according to their website, Coffman Park is building eight pickleball courts that are supposed to be completed this Spring! This week we are completing our Badminton (and "Speedminton") unit, and tomorrow the students have voted for a Just Dance workout! Next week we will start our unit on Cricket! Go Celts!
I hope all the kids had fun in class this week! We played three fitness related games (Trivia, BINGO and Snakes and Ladders)! I divided the students up into small groups and put them in break out rooms to work together. Break out rooms are a great way for the kids to get to know their classmates, make new friends, learn better communication and cooperation skills.
Have a great weekend! =)

The students spent the week exploring volume and density. We will continue our investigation of density next week. On Monday, 2/22/21, students will have an opportunity to participate in an optional lab activity. A list of supplies for the activity can be located in our Daily Agenda.

Due to the snow day, we are just finishing up with Chemical and Physical properties and changes. Next week we will focus on states of matter and changes in state. We will eventually be acting as forensic scientists and help the FBI solve a case involving counterfeit coins.
Last week, we learned about the economic impacts of migration. This week, we will be learning about the cultural impacts of migration.
This week we will continue our unit on human and environmental interactions. We will be exploring how humans depend on things in our environment, how we adapt when needed, and finally how we modify our environment.
