KMS YEARBOOK ORDERS 2020-2021
What better way to commemorate the unique experience this year has been than by purchasing a Karrer yearbook!?! Please see THIS FLIER for information on yearbook orders, which will be done 100% on-line this year.
Official ordering dates will be Feb. 1-19. Books are $30 each.
REMOTE LEARNING STUDENTS: We want you in the yearbook too! Please see THIS FORM to submit photos from your home learning environment and experiences that can be included in the KMS yearbook. E-mail Mrs. Kurtz with any questions.
CHROME BOOK - SHUT DOWN
Please log out and SHUT DOWN your Chromebook and not just close it at least once a week.
Let it remain shut down for at least 1 hour or even better while you sleep tonight.
The shut down allows the computer to update itself so it runs more efficiently.
DCS VIRTUAL CALMING ROOM
Need a brain break? Need a place to virtually chillax and zone out for a few minutes?
Take a moment to check out our DCS Virtual Calming Room. You will find live animal cameras, online coloring books, and visual relaxation videos, to name a few.
Cameras and Google Meet - Please encourage your student to turn on the camera on Google Meet during classes. It is difficult to know if a student is on task or is understanding the material when the camera is turned off. Google Meet is releasing a new feature to blur the background that is being pushed out through the next few days.
If your family is experiencing hardship, please see THIS FLYER with information about support available within the Dublin community.
With the shorter week we focused on our Greek and Latin roots, ant, anti, contra, contro and counter meaning "against or opposite". Ask your child what new vocabulary words they've learned! We also continued our discussion of activism by reading The Youngest Marcher about the 9 year old Civil Rights Activist, Audrey Faye Hendricks. We will be learning about thesis statements and essay structures in the coming weeks.
We have continued to work on our research for our Teen Activist essay and are beginning to look at the graphic organizer that will help us put all of our research into a nice little five paragraph essay. We also began our work in Word Study with the Greek and Latin roots, ant, anti, contra, contro and counter meaning "against or opposite". Ask them about their learning.
We will continue our exploration of percents by focusing on these essential ideas:
The hundredths grid can be used to represent a fraction, decimal, or percent.
To write a fraction as a percent, scale up or down to an equivalent fraction with a denominator of 100, if possible. (This will support our understanding of proportions)
A benchmark percent is a percent that is commonly used, such as 1%, 5%, 10%, 25%, 50%, and 100%.
Percent problems involve three quantities: the part, the whole, and the percent.
When calculating the whole, given the percent and the part, write the percent as a fraction with a denominator of 100 and set it equal to the part over x. Then solve for x. (This will be a main focus as we move into unit rates)

This week in Modern Literacy we took our Unit 2 Assessment. We continued on Code.org and started researching a mini project. On Thursday, we started learning a method for analyzing information to ensure our research is sound.
Next week, we will continue to look at our research and evaluate our search results for accuracy.
Its been so fun working learning HTML with you all this week. Next week we will be continuing to use code.org to become better coders. We will learning new tags to use as well as implementing them into a webpage of our own design. Be ready to be creative and think critically. Have a great long weekend.
Please check Schoology.
This week students completed the yoga unit! The art of practicing yoga helps bring together physical and mental disciplines. Yoga helps increase flexibility, muscle strength, and body tone. Also, it helps manage stress, anxiety and keeps you relaxed.
I hope every student had fun learning new postures and trying something different this week. I appreciate all the hard work and effort the students are giving me every week!
I hope everyone has a safe and fun weekend! =)

The students spent the week investigating volume through online simulations using Gizmo. We will explore density next week.

We've been talking about Chemical and Physical properties and changes. We will now focus on states of matter and changes in state. We will eventually be acting as forensic scientists and help the FBI solve a case involving counterfeit coins.
We have been learning about human migration: push and pull factors. Next week, we will be learning about migration impacts: economics & cultural. Have a wonderful long weekend.
We will be completing our unit on ancient India with a test on Wednesday. After that we will begin our unit on human and environmental interactions. We will be exploring how humans depend on things in our environment, how we adapt when needed, and finally how we modify our environment.
