Monday, January 18, 2021 - No School - Martin Luther King, Jr. Day
TUESDAY, JANUARY 26, 2021
8th Graders in Hybrid and in RLA have the opportunity to take the PSAT.
As a result, all 6th and 7th grade students will have an asynchronous learning day.
Teachers will post assignments on Schoology for the day.
CHROMEBOOK - SHUT DOWN
Please log out and SHUT DOWN your Chromebook and not just close it at least once a week.
Let it remain shut down for at least 1 hour or even better while you sleep tonight.
The shut down allows the computer to update itself so it runs more efficiently.
2:00 - 3:00 PM STUDY CENTER/OFFICE HOURS
Please encourage your student to use the 2:00 - 3:00 PM block of time as a study center. Students should use this time to complete assignments and review concepts just like they would do if we were physically in the school building.
Teachers are available in their Google Meets to answer questions and to help our students.
Students may also attend a teacher's Meet to simply work. This has helped some students to be productive during the block of time.
PAINT THE PLOW CONTEST
As you know, we could not do our Paint the Plow partnership with DCS this year. So, we are doing a virtual contest.
The contest runs now through January 31.

DCS VIRTUAL CALMING ROOM
Need a brain break? Need a place to virtually chillax and zone out for a few minutes?
Take a moment to check out our DCS Virtual Calming Room. You will find live animal cameras, online coloring books, and visual relaxation videos, to name a few.
Cameras and Google Meet - Please encourage your student to turn on the camera on Google Meet during classes. It is difficult to know if a student is on task or is understanding the material when the camera is turned off. Google Meet is releasing a new feature to blur the background that is being pushed out through the next few days.
If your family is experiencing hardship, please see THIS FLYER with information about support available within the Dublin community.
"What does it take to be a teen activist?" This is the question we are exploring as are learning about activism. This week we discussed what we knew about adult activists like Martin Luther King, Jr. and how that knowledge can help us as we learn about the characteristics of young activists. We read an article about MLK's granddaughter, Yolanda Renne King, who is following in her grandfather's footsteps. We'll be studying teen activist such as Malala, Greta Thunberg and Emmanuel Ofusu Yeboah. We'll also practice note-taking strategies to prepare for our informational essay.
We have had a great week of thinking about Teen Activists. We read Brave Girl: Clara and the Shirtwaist Maker's Strike of 1909 written by Michelle Markel and illustrated by Melissa Sweet. We talked about how young people can use their voice to make change. In the coming week we will talk about Malala, Emmanuel Ofusu Yeboah and more. We will be learning about different notetaking strategies as we explore different teen activists.
We will continue to learn about ratios. This week we will begin to think about comparing ratio graphs by using the strategies we have previously learned. We have now looked at equivalent ratios on double number lines and ratio tables to support our understanding.
The students have weekly goals for MATHia. Please help to remind your student to work on MATHia as a support to our learning.

This week, we discussed how what we post online today may affect our future. On Tuesday and Wednesday, we used drawing tools to recreate something on screen and then we created our own drawings using Google Draw. Ask your student to see them. They were awesome. Friday we shared our work and practiced giving thoughtful feedback. Over the weekend, we will track our media use for a day using Google Sheets and create a visual representation of our media use.
Next week, we will be starting to learn html coding and learning how search engines work.
Thanks for exploring our search engines with me this week. Next week we will be looking at some of the different dangers that come with online spaces and learning how to navigate them in a safe way.
We started our week by learning our last five yoga poses. We now have fifteen poses to practice throughout the quarter. There will be an assessment via Flipgrid in a few weeks, I will give them time to practice. I took the students on a trip to the 1990's and introduced them to Tae Bo! Billy Blanks has certainly been keeping us on our toes! Our interactive workout will be on Tuesday 1/19 due to MAP testing. We will be doing a fun and challenging workout with a deck of cards!
This week the students worked on a Movement Patterns assessment. This assessment allowed students to be creative and come up with their own fitness, yoga, dance, or jump rope routines!
