Electrolysis and Electrology

Electrology is the specialty of permanent hair removal. A tiny, sterile filament is skillfully inserted into the hair follicle along the hair in the hair shaft. This gentle insertion is not usually noticed by you because each hair pore will easily expand to allow the filament to slide in next to the hair. A mild impulse of electrical current is then applied through the filament to destroy the hair root and cauterize the blood supply to the hair. Once completely destroyed, the follicle is unable produce another hair.

Professional electrolysis has been used for over a hundred years to remove unwanted hair. There is conclusive evidence and widespread acceptance by scientists and physicians that it is the only method of hair removal to have a permanent effect. The scientific community have never agreed to state that any other method will permanently remove excess hair. Although there is cause to agree that laser hair removal offers a permanent reduction in hair growth.

Length of Treatment

This is by far the most difficult question to answer briefly. Many different factors determine the length of time necessary to completely remove all your unwanted hair. They are:

  • The type of hair you have--straight, wavy, curly
  • What temporary methods of hair removal you have previously employed
  • The kind of skin you have--normal, fine or super-sensitive
  • Your metabolic rate--how quickly your skin heals, how fast your hair grows
  • The location of the hair (some areas must be treated more slowly than others)
  • The quantity of hair to be removed
  • The cause of your hair growth
  • Add to this the frequency of treatments, because the more regularly you take treatment the quicker you will be rid of your superfluous hair.

You will not get rid of your unwanted hair in a single treatment - it takes a whole series of treatments to achieve permanent hair removal. Although some hairs will be permanently removed at the very first treatment any hairs which were not in the active growing phase when treated will simply regenerate. The number of electrolysis sessions you will need and the time required for each session will vary depending on the type and amount of hair you would like removed.

For example, a hair begins to grow in a major follicle, producing a coarse hair. This coarse hair is surrounded by finer follicles that may or may not be producing hair at this time. It will often seem, after some electrolysis treatment, that the treated hair is regrowing somewhat finer. But here's what's really happening. The treated hair has been permanently removed. However, since we treat an effect (unwanted hair growth), not a cause (increase in hormone production), a finer follicle adjacent to the treated hair may now be stimulated by hormones to produce a hair. It is finer since it grows from a finer follicle. The hair that seem to appear as regrowth often is in reality additional adjacent hair now beginning to grow. This is the reason it takes time to accomplish permanent removal of all the hair, the ones that are visible and growing and also those that have the potential to grow. When a hair is treated properly by electrolysis, it is removed permanently and can never return.

Excessive hair growth, can range from fine, vellus hair to dark, coarse hair on the face and body. Deep, coarse hairs cannot always be eliminated with one treatment; thus, breaking down the hair growth cells may require additional treatments. Based on a personal and confidential consultation, your electrologist will design a treatment plan that addresses your specific hair removal needs.

Testimonials

Not all electrolysis are the same. I know I have tried several, now I drive 80+ miles. I really like what they have done for me [at Dublin Electrolysis]. They are very good! - KL

Just had to write and "Thank You" and let you know how much I appreciate how you cared for me yesterday. You have such a caring spirit yet very professional. I am so glad I found you! My skin feels so soft and good! - MB

Merrilee is realistic about what I can expect in terms of progress and is always open to my questions. She clearly cares about her clients--I actually feel pampered when I meet with her! The difference in my life after a couple of months of treatment is pretty remarkable. Even though I was removing hair from my face every morning, I used to feel I could never do anything spontaneously because of the need to go home and check/pluck my face first. I don't do that any more. I also had an unexpected benefit: I no longer have recurring cysts in my chin (which I simply had attributed to acne) now that my hair follicles in that area are being treated. I have reclaimed so much time and flexibility since beginning electrolysis, and it helps to know I'm in such good hands at your office. - LH

My face looks great thanks to you and your family here at Dublin Electrolysis!
