Hello! I am Sarah Cynthia Gomes and I have been serving as a Lecturer in the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering (EEE), University of Dhaka since July 2022. Prior to this, I also worked as a Lecturer in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) at BRAC University (2022) and International Standard University (2021-2022).
I obtained my Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering (2018) from the University of Dhaka. I was also awarded the prestigious Dean’s Award (2020) for my academic excellence in undergraduation. Afterwards, I earned my Master of Science (M.Sc.) degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering from the University of Dhaka in 2020. As an M.Sc. student, I also received the National Science and Technology (NST) Fellowship (2020) - a research grant awarded by the government. I have one peer reviewed publication in RSC Advances (IF: 4.036) and one conference proceeding in Optica (formerly Optical Society of America).
My research interest concentrates on the applications of nanophotonics, mainly in designing biophotonic devices for real time and label free sensing. I completed a study on graphene based hyperbolic metamaterials, coupled to nanograting structures for mid-IR sensing. The performance of the sensor was based on its response in detecting some commonly found biomolecules like human IgG, HSA, ss-DNA and ds-DNA. I am currently exploring and analyzing various two-dimensional materials alongside flexible materials with an aim to develop highly efficient optical biosensors.
Moreover, I have been a professional member of IEEE since January 2023 and am currently serving as a faculty advisor in IEEE Women in Engineering Affinity Group Student Branch, University of Dhaka. In addition to this, I am also working as a research faculty in Emerging Nanoscale Devices (END) Research Group, supervised by Dr. Mainul Hossain.
I am a true believer of life-long learning and I dream of pursuing a stable career in academia and contributing more to research.
