Cinema is both a mirror and a battleground—reflecting societies, shaping identities, and rewriting histories. Saiyeed Shahjada Al Kareem stands at this crossroads as a learner, educator, and filmmaker—continuously exploring, weaving stories, dissecting narratives, and challenging perceptions.
Saiyeed joined the Department of Television, Film and Photography at the University of Dhaka as a Lecturer in 2021 and currently serves as an Assistant Professor. He teaches undergraduate courses such as Language of Audiovisual Media, Narrative Strategies and Screenwriting, and guides graduate students in courses like Broadcast and Film Policy, New Media and Society, along with supervising students in their graduate film productions.
His research focuses on the intricate intersections of cinema, society, culture, and politics, with particular emphasis on political cinema, national identity, and social consciousness.
Beyond academia, Saiyeed actively engages in independent filmmaking, contributing as screenwriter and/or director. He has worked in various capacities in a diverse range of fiction and non-fiction films, spanning both short and feature-length formats, including DaarKaak (Raven, 2024), Ki'ōri pēkarā u, (Dear Mother,, 2023), Bangabandhu and Dhaka Bishwobidyaloy (2022), Dhaka University Centennial Illumination (2021), Ghor (2020), Water (2020), and Ainer Dorojay (Before the Law, 2019).
He is currently involved in the upcoming film projects Necrophile, Jaal, Shabuj Pakhir Goppo, and Namhin Gotrohin.
