How can art, like Picasso's Guernica, be used to creatively express the impact of societal conflict and promote actvistism?
Art like Picasso's Guernica can be used to express emotional and psychological warfare impacted by societal conflict through symbolism, abstraction, and color. Guernica depicts the horror and consequences of bombing the Basque town in the Spanish Civil War through disfigured, anguished faces and monochrome tones, which leave the audience with a sense of horror and sorrow.
This was a game that our grade played during Power 45 your objective for the game is you our presdient and you have to make difercult choices regarding foregin policies.

For our Guernica project, my group chose to focus on pollution. This topic is important to us because pollution harms both our health and the planet. It affects the air we breathe, making it difficult or dangerous to inhale, contaminates our water so it’s undrinkable or tastes strange, and weakens our food systems. In our video, we conveyed the message that pollution is a national crisis, shared ways to combat it, and showed how it connects to Picasso’s Guernica by illustrating the widespread suffering and chaos pollution can cause—just like the destruction and pain depicted in the original painting

For this part of the project, I created a poster focusing on abortion rights. My poster explores the impact of women being forced to carry an unwanted pregnancy. The central image highlights how women are already carrying so many burdens, and now are being forced to carry even more. I used a powerful image of a woman carrying the world, symbolizing the overwhelming responsibilities women already face. A second image shows a woman being forced to carry a baby, capturing the deep emotional toll of being denied the right to choose. My goal was to evoke both sadness for the women who endure this and anger over the loss of their freedom.
For the second part of the project, we are supposed to showcase a video on our propaganda poster topic. My group chose Inequity in the workplace because people of color and women are still not getting paid the same amount of money as their white/ male counterparts. In our video, we told the story of three young adults graduating from college with the same degree, and applying for the same job two get in but one does not because of her gender, while the other co-worker who is working at the company is significantly paid less than her white male co-worker. Our goal was to bring out the anger at how unfairly minorities are treated.

For the first part of my project, I recreated a scene from Guernica—specifically the woman burning in the fire and the other woman trying to blow the fire out. Our goal was to include the chemical formula that represents the emotion we depicted. I chose fear as my primary emotion, because being trapped in a fire would naturally cause intense fear and panic. I also included calmness, shown through the second woman who is trying to soothe her—perhaps understanding that the end is near. This contrast between fear and calm highlights the emotional intensity of the scene and connects both the artistic and scientific elements of the project.
For the second part of the project, I had to write a paragraph describing the section of Guernica that I chose to recreate. I focused on the woman trying to escape a burning house, and the wind attempting to blow out the flames. I explained how terrifying it would be to be trapped in that situation, and the deep sense of sorrow that comes from knowing you can’t get out. I also connected this to how chemistry and art work hand in hand—without chemistry, we wouldn’t have paints, dyes, or the ability to create materials like ceramics. My goal was to show how both science and art can be used to express powerful emotions and experiences

For this part of the project, we created small triangles where we drew and wrote things that made us feel powerful. We then combined them to build a tetrahedron. I completed 20 of these triangles and also helped the Junior Academy create theirs. Later, some of our classmates helped by hot-gluing all the pieces together to complete the final structure.
