The Engineering Design Notebook is our recording of what we have completed during each class period. It outlines the process we have made towards our pinball machine, and shows the constraints for each component.

Constraints Sheet for Game Layout

The constraints sheet for our game layout served the purpose of allowing us to make sure we were completing all of the necessary tasks to ensure a fully functional game layout. The constraints sheet included its functionality, durability, aesthetics, and installation. We would be grading on how well we demonstrated each of these aspects.

Scoring Plan

The scoring plan was created to ensure we made a fair and fun game. It outlined how many points each bumper and target would give you.

Lighting Plan

The lighting plan was created to help us keep track of the purpose of specific lights. Certain lights would illuminate slowly, while others would glow once a target was hit.

Hand-drawn layout

The hand-drawn layout was our first iteration of how we wanted our entire board to look. The layout was to scale, outlining all the ball guides, targets, bumpers, flippers, lights, and unique mechanical components we wanted on our pinball machine.

ONshape Layout

The Onshape layout was our final iteration of the layout of our pinball board. We took specific measurements and made the layout in Onshape to ensure that the holes we created in the board were the perfect size and at the perfect place. We used the CNC machine to cut out the board using this template.

Pinball museum research

For the beginning of our pinball project, we need to research how to properly build our pinball machine. To do that, we visited a pinball museum that had tons of pinball machines we could try. The one in the video on the left was my favorite because of the Avengers theme; it also had secret cutscenes and effects you could achieve if you complete special situations. The pictures below are pictures of specific components I liked on the other pinball machines.

This picture shows the railing that is used to keep the ball in place as it goes up the board. This rail is special because it makes the ball wrap around the board instead of straight up.

This is the overall layout of the Frontier pinball machine. It also shows the lights used when you play the game.

This is the scoreboard. It shows the number of balls left, your name, and your total score.

This is an example of a background that I enjoyed. I liked the colorful colors and name.

This is an example of a target. These three white targets go back into the board if they are hit by the ball. It also gives you additional points.

This picture shows the flippers used in the Avengers-themed pinball machine. I loved the white and red colors on the flipper, as they stand out on the backboard.

This picture shows the launcher and ball counter. The ball counter is inside the launcher and lets the game know when the player runs out of balls. The launcher is also covered.

This picture shows a bumper in the Avengers theme pinball machine. This pinball machine has the bumpers placed below the railings, and has a unique graphic on top of it.

This is a unique mechanical component apart from the Frontier pinball machine. This side bumper is meant to help the person keep the ball in play. It is placed beside the flippers.

This is the rules board of the Metallica pinball game. It tells you the goal of the game and how to score the most points while being in theme.

This video shows the light components of a pinball machine. The lights on a pinball machine display are very important to the pinball machine, as they give a happy and exciting feeling.

This video shows the servo(spinning) component of a pinball machine. These components give more life and movement to a pinball machine. You can also have it help convey your theme.
