For our entry event in this project, a local pizza chef came into class today and taught us how to make dough. He also explained how he makes his signature pizza, and the different cultures he draws inspiration from. We used the dough we made to make our own little pizzas, which we were able to bake and eat.
In ELA, we were split into groups of four to five, and were tasked to create a recipe for a dish using ingredients from all of our favorite dishes. My group members were Jayla, Amersha, Lauren, and Habib. We came up with a Choco Banana Pudding Pie. It combines chocolate with vanilla wafers, banana pudding, and a pie format. During the PBL showcase, we actually made this dish using our own recipe. Visitors said they really loved our dish, and that it had a nice mix between the crunch from the vanilla wafers and the softness of the banana pudding.
In art, the goal of this project was to create a table setting that included elements related to the columbian exchange. Throughout the last couple of weeks, we’ve had different projects from different classes that are related to the food disparity that is a current issue in the U.S. Those projects talk about current food issues, while our art depicts food topics throughout history. We made our table setting out of clay, and wanted to incorporate African designs and native americans foods in our table setting. Both Africans and Native Americans played very crucial roles in the diffusion of goods in the Columbian Exchange. Throughout the construction of our table setting, we used techniques like slabbing, scoring, slipping, blending, and pinching. We really succeeded in the quality of the different foods, along with the plate. If we had more time, I would carve different patterns on the table mat.
For our exit ticket of this PBL, our grade level went on a field trip to the High Museum of Arts. We observed the beautiful artworks on display while reading how several cultures and ideas inspired the creation of them. We also had a scavenger hunt, which made the entire field trip more interesting. After our trip to the museum, we ate lunch at No Mas!
