Harp Biography
Nia McKelvey is a 10th grade student at Charles R. Drew Charter School. She is a member of the Urban Youth Harp Ensemble and has been playing the harp for 4 years. She participated in Solo and Ensemble Performance Evaluation in Spring 2023, 2024, and 2025. In the Spring of 2023, she played Moonlight by Susann McDonald and was awarded a superior rating for this piece. In the Spring of 2024, she played Concert Etude by Susann McDonald and was also awarded a superior rating for this piece. She also played Old French Song by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky alongside Chloe Rockmore and they were awarded a superior rating for this piece. In addition to harp, she has been playing softball for about 2 years for the Drew Charter School Softball Team. In her first year of playing softball, she was chosen as MVP. In her second year, she was awarded best pitching award. McKelvey enjoys spending time with family and friends, watching television, and trying new things in her free time. Nia would like to travel the world when she becomes older, and she hopes to attend a HBCU for her college choice, and wants to get a Masters of Business Administration at Emory University.
“Concert Etude” is a piece written by Susann McDonald. This piece is from a collection of harp books called Graded Recital Pieces. This piece in Volume 1 of Harp Solos. Susann McDonald and Linda Wood wrote this collection of harp books together in 1982. McDonald and Wood have written numerous songs together.
