Long before humans walked the earth, before pollutants filled the lands and waters, before streets and skyscrapers populated our land , there were kingdoms that consisted of many different magical beings, things like mermaids, dragons and elves roamed freely and proudly. Although the kingdoms were all different they all believed that the all knowing deer put them there when she first created the earth. They believed that the all knowing deer spread all the races out across the land and watches over them from her spot in the sky where she holds the planet up. She made all the races fairly equal, all but one: the fairies. They were the most powerful of all the races their intellect, strength and wisdom set them apart from any other kingdoms; they were at peace and self-sufficient in the fairy forest that sat just west of Giant's valley. Fairy forest stood strong with it's four walls and impenetrable army it was nearly impossible to infiltrate. In this vast forest there rests one fairy who is said to be the most revered and almighty of them all; fairy king Abaka. Abaka has ruled the fairies for nearly 2,000 years; he is the second to do so his predecessor; fairy king Zenno, was defeated in one of the great wars between the races. Fairy king abaka has become very popular and liked among the citizens of fairy forest. They grew fond of him after he put an end to the war and constant bickering between the races. As his popularity spread amongst the lands and the kingdom's word got out that he has an obsession with fur, the fairy king has bared this fascination ever since he was very young. He collects furs and hides from all types of animals; they populate nearly every floor and wall of his extensive castle.
One day as the king sat on his high chair he was greeted by his soldiers. They told him of how there has been an intruder that has tried to fly over the great walls. They went on to say how he had something important for the king to hear. The 2 soldier fairies brought the prisoner to the great hall to have a conversation with the king. To the kings surprise the Intruder was small multi colored parrot that rested behind the bars of a bird cage.
“ Your highness I am luccio ventedo the third, I come from far and wide bearing a request I think you'd be more than glad to hear of, ” the parrot spoke .
“Go on,” the king responded sluggishly
“I ask that you set me free with no punishment, in exchange I show you the passage by air to the all-knowing deer herself. I've heard from a foe that you collect fur and hides of all kinds and I believe that the all-knowing deer's fur would make a wonderful addition to your collection.”
“You fool, did you really think you could deceive me with such lies? No one has ever seen the all knowing deer face to face not even the divine fairy races wings can get to such heights so how would a low life form like you be able to make it. I'm done with you , you are to receive the same punishment as any intruder,” The prince made one motion of his hands and the soldiers were on their way out with the parrot.
“WAIT, IM SERIOUS, i have stood face to face with the deer i promise i even stared her in her ferocious green eyes,I have proof,” lucio cried from the cage
“I have a piece of hair from the magnificent deer” he said, pulling out a single strand of glowing blue hair.
This caught the attention of the king that one strand of hair convinced the king to hear out the parrots plan. They talked all night about how they would get a patch of fur off the all knowing deer who stood watch of the planet. They finally came up with a plan to gather Army of fairies and take the route that the parrots showed.
The next week the king does as he said and gathers his army of the most strong and compatible fairies known in the land. Soon after he got everyone, they set off on their four-day journey. The King himself, usually doesn't go too far from his Forest but he had to see the all knowing deer with his own eyes he made sure to bring lucio with him though. The fairies and one bird made their way through Dragon volcano, troll Mountain, siren River and even the yeti glaciers. They flew and they flew until they finally came to a stop in a desert land free of any creatures The parrot explained how they must fly straight up from there he went on to explain how dangerous and scary the trip is. They make their way through clouds and sky until they finally can make out a deer.
“Shes beautiful,” the king whispered.
“Oh my god shes actually here, this is astounding,” lucio let out with a gasp
“You would know you've seen her have you not?”
“Oh...yeah of course i have,” the parrot stuttered and mumbled
“Cmon, lets get a little closer”
As the troop of fairies and the fairy King inch closer to the all-knowing deer the fairy King starts to notice things about the deer that seemed different then what lucio had told him. First off her fur grew straight and was bright pearly white in color and the hair lucio showed in the castle was a dark blue with curls and frizzes. The second thing he noticed was that the all knowing deers eyes were white with no pupal unlike the green eyes Lucio described back home.
The king tried to put his thoughts behind him and continue his flight towards the deer’s rear end.Once the Army arrived at the deer's fur they got in their planned formation to cut a small length of the deer's fur without her noticing. And once the king gave his signal the fairies started cutting away at the deer's fur. After cutting for around five minutes they were all suddenly teleported to space facing the deer. The king could feel her breath coming from her nose.
“How dare you creatures, after all i've given you,” she snapped
Then with one punishing look, the fairy's wings were gone and they started to fall through the sky. They fell fast and uncontrollably until they came to a complete stop in the middle of space they all held a piece of the deer's magical hair that could be seen glowing all the way from earth.
“You shall stay here for all eternity, and i shall call you stars,” she told the fairies
“And for you,” she directed her attention towards the crying parrot.
“Since you feel the need to spread lies about me I shall curse you and the rest of your kind to only speak what you have heard from others” she said , banishing him and teleporting him back to earth.
Meanwhile on earth all the fairies in fairy forest began to lose their wings and are forced to walk on both feet all because of the mistakes of their leader. The leader who can be seen every night from on earth every now and then the fairies escape the all knowing deers time trap and fall through the sky before being brought back to their spots. And as the years go on many of the other creatures try their luck in meeting the all knowing deer but sadly they all meet the same fate as the fairy king and his men and with time the sky slowly fills up with ‘stars’.
In American Literature, we studied the mythology of Native American Cultures, including "The World on a Turtle's Back" by the Iroquois, and Coyote Stories from the Okanogan tribes. We learned about traits of creation myths, the use of archetypes, such as the Trickster, and techniques such as anthropomorphism. I thought it was very interesting how stories could be carried down for hundreds of years without being written down.
To display what we learned, we wrote and produced our own Original Creation Myths to explain the existence of at least one thing. We had to include at least one trickster character and an anthropomorphic character.
On my myth specifically, I chose to write about how humans and how stars were made. the story takes place in a land where there are magical beings. there is a fairy king who loves fur and hides so he sets out on a quest to steal fur from the almighty deer who holds up the earth. Once he finds thhe deer they are caught steling and are punished by loosing their wings thus creating humans and while falling back out of the sky they get trapped in time making them idle in the sky likes stars.
I incorparated trickster characters in my story when i used the parrot who was the person that lied himself out of trouble by telling the king he met the all knowing deer when he didnt.
We rad and analyzed poetry from Emily Dickinson and selected one of her works to create a "score" or soundtrack for it.
My group chose the poem 'I am nobody Who are You' Which had a darker romantic tone. and a slower meter. In the video we played deeper notes in between lines of the poem to convey a darker theme.
