This year in Theater Tech, we produced a Black History performance that was both meaningful and challenging.
At the conclusion of the show, our teacher asked us to write a reflection on our experience. In my reflection, I discussed the highs and lows of the process, including what went well and what could be improved for future productions.
While my main responsibility remained in the box office, during rehearsals and behind-the-scenes work, I also took on the role of a runner—assisting wherever I was needed to support both the cast and the tech crew. This experience gave me a deeper understanding of the overall organization and coordination it takes to put on a successful performance.
Through this reflection, I was able to share my observations and offer suggestions for how we could improve the workflow, communication, and structure of future shows. It was a valuable learning experience and helped me grow both as a team member and as someone passionate about theater production.
As part of our Theater Tech training, we were tasked with creating an emergency plan to prepare for various scenarios that could occur during a performance or rehearsal.
In my plan, I outlined procedures for how we should respond in the event of a fire, an intruder, severe weather, a medical emergency, and a power outage. I focused on safety, clear communication, and efficient evacuation or response strategies to ensure everyone involved—cast, crew, and audience—could remain as safe as possible.
This exercise helped me think critically about crisis management in a live performance setting and highlighted the importance of being prepared for unexpected situations in a theater environment.
In Theater Tech, my primary role has often been working in the box office, where I was responsible for selling tickets.
To help future students in this role, I created a detailed checklist outlining how the box office should be run efficiently and professionally. I also compiled 15 key facts about the box office to give others a better understanding of its history, importance, and how it operates within the theater industry.
