The Guernica Project: The Power of Art: Depicting Conflict and Resistance Through Art
✨ Driving Question: How can art, like Picasso’s Guernica, be used to creatively express the impact of societal conflict and promote activism?
Picasso used Guernica to spread information and advocate for the people who needed awareness and help. His art was an example of a peaceful protest, making others pay attention to what they don’t want to. Picasso uses a very exaggerated and nonrealistic art style to convey the harsh emotions the characters in Guernica are feeling. Instead of being a realist, Picasso allows the viewer to infer and assume the way the characters are feeling and connect to the piece. Picasso's Guernica is a weird and interesting art piece that shows you can inform and bring awareness, and still grab your attention.
Guernica is blue, black, and white and is 11 ft tall and 25.6 ft wide, a mural-size canvas painted with oil paints. It was created in response to the bombing of the Basque town of Guernica in 1937 during the Spanish Civil War. It has become an anti-war symbol and an embodiment of peace. Guernica has toured all around the world and brought awareness to the Spanish Civil War.

What conflict would you put your life on the line for? (ChemVAS Apr. 17, 2025)
One conflict that I’d put my life on the line for is the fight for mental health care access. There is an extreme lack of resources for people in low income areas and communities. Insurance is extremely expensive and a lot of people that are disproportionately impacted are poorer people. There is also a lack of resources and correct information surrounding mental illness. Living in a poor or low-income household has been linked to poor health and increased risk for mental health problems.
Children and families living in poverty face a range of barriers that reduce their ability to access mental health services from possible transportation issues interfering with treatment to not being able to receive treatment due to inadequate insurance . People in poorer areas struggle to stay in treatment or even get treatment. I’ve been in the same situation not being able to get treatment due to not having the right insurance. It became a stressor for my family. Due to me not having stable transportation access I’ve missed important appointments and have not always been able to counter the effects of that. So many other people have been in the same position but won’t be able to get help.
Propaganda Poster/PSA (World Literature)
First we researched topics we could write about and create a propaganda poster then we made sketches of what we would like to do after a lot of trial and error I chose my topic internet safety for young people. I then created my catchphrase and creaded the art for it. After I was done I put everything together
World Conflicts (World History)
How can we use the conflicts we learnd about in class to fuil our ideas on the guernica project?
We learned about World War I and World War II, as well as the Industrial Revolution. In these time periods where people had different ideas on how the world should be run. This was a time where people were willing to go to war to prove that they were right or to get their way. These events connect to because Garnica is an art piece that is protesting the bombing of the town of Bosque in Garnica, which was bombed due to the Spanish Civil War . the Garnica is a anti-war symbol saying wars bad that everyone is going to be hurt and no sight truly wins, which I think is very important to think about terms of other historical battles and time peri The Garnica is a anti-war symbol saying wars bad that everyone is going to be hurt and no sight truly wins, which I think is very important to think about terms of other historical battles and time periods.
Tetrahedron Structures (Geometry)
I worked with Ms. Wilson and other students in my grade to complete the tetrahedron project or sculpture. The sculpture it was for mu alpha, Beta student organization, and the maker space showcase we create we had to use templates to create a pyramid, and on each base of the pyramid, we made drawings and how it related to our stream in someway or what makes us feel powerful so I did different pieces with different colors that I associate with powerful imagery I use the colors, yellow, bright, pink, and orange a lot, and I drew different things like that had something to do with my imagination because to me, my imagination makes me feel powerful and strong. The reason we had to make drawings that symbolize what made us feel powerful was because B. make a special cases theme was power.
