Charles R. Drew Charter School is a STEAM and PBL-based Charter school. That means that the focus is on how Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics impact student learning and how the school can include these subjects into all aspects of student life. Being a PBL, which stands for Project-Based Learning, the school curriculum means that at the end of each semester, students will complete a project, including most of their classes, and all STEAM pieces. These students will work together to showcase their work to parents, classmates, and the school community. Drew offers students different programs and opportunities they might not get at other schools, from the cradle to college pipeline, to the Free SAT prep testing and free AP classes, and opportunities to take their respective AP exams. Drew receives funding to help students succeed and stay prepared in their high school careers and into life after school, raising students as leaders, teaching them skills like empathy, integrity, and respect for themselves and others.
I attended Drew because when I was younger, I was a part of one of Drew's programs that helped allow students who lived in the villages to stay in the villages and avoid families from being pushed out of their community. If you lived in the East Lake villages/area, you got priority in the school. Since then, I've moved further away from the school, but I choose to continue to attend Drew because I believe they have opportunities I wouldn't be able to get in other schools, and when going to college is important to you. You want to use and take all the opportunities made available to you.
