Today me, Michael, and Nadiyah made ink. We burned spoons and made it into ink.
Today I created lampblack ink with my teammates, Michael and Nadiyah, a traditional black ink made from soot. I generated soot by holding a ceramic plate over the flame from a tea candle. The soot (lampblack) collected on the surface of the plate was then scraped off and mixed with a binder—gum arabic—and a small amount of water to make the ink.
This process involved incomplete combustion, a chemical reaction where a carbon-based fuel (in my case, vegetable oil or candle wax) burns with limited oxygen, producing carbon soot (C) instead of fully converting to carbon dioxide (CO₂). The black soot, or lampblack, is made of fine particles of nearly pure carbon.
Reaction type: Incomplete combustion
Compounds involved:
Hydrocarbons (fuel, e.g., candle wax: CₙH₂ₙ₊₂)
Oxygen (O₂)
Products: Carbon (C, in soot form), Carbon Monoxide (CO), Water (H₂O), possibly some CO₂
Art Connection
Lampblack ink has been used for centuries in calligraphy, illustration, and painting. It's known for its deep black tone and permanence. Ancient Chinese and Indian ink formulations relied on soot-based pigments like lampblack.
My ink turned out smooth.
Successes:
The soot was very fine and black
Mixed well with the gum arabic
The ink flowed smoothly with a brush
Challenges:
Collecting enough soot took time
Some water separation occurred if left sitting
The ink was a little too thick/thin initially, but I adjusted with more water/gum arabic
Why it worked or didn’t:
The success of the ink depended on getting a fine, pure soot and mixing it evenly with the binder. If the binder ratio was off, it affected the texture and flow of the ink.

BUT IS IT ART? 7/29/2024
What "Art" means to you, and how can other subjects (science/ English /history/math be art?
Art means being creative with your own thoughts. Scientific data can be presented through beautiful infographics and visualizations, turning complex information into compelling visual art. Mathematics involves patterns, shapes, and symmetry that can be visually striking. Writing and storytelling about historical events can be approached with a creative flair, blending facts with narrative techniques to make history come alive. The use of metaphors, symbolism, and poetic devices in language can transform ordinary communication into an art form.
