Since I was awe struck by this beautiful instrument in 6th grade, the playing the harp has been my passion. The way I have been able to create and innovate with music has been an opportunity I am grateful for. As I approach my 7th year in harp, I reflect on all that I have done with the Urban Youth Ensemble. From performing pieces that were made just for my ensemble, to having my first paid gig where I learned more about the life of a musician. Through harp, I was able to assist teachers and taught weekly masterclasses to after-school students. I also perform at events to support community programs and charitable causes.
In addition to harp, I have been apart of my school's choir since 5th grade. Combining both of my performing arts classes and being able to see how the fine arts are interconnected has been part of my exploration in these classes. In choir, I would love to create harmonies and discover new music to enrich others. Through this, I have been able to attend numerous competitions and perform at the District IV Honor Chorus with Grammy award winning conductor _______________. I would like to continue as apart of my college experience.
Young, Black, Excellence was a club started by seniors in the class of 2019 to create a safe space for black students to discuss and pan events for the community surrounding racial and social injustices. As President I was able to facilitate a positive environment and regular meetings while interfacing with school administration. I was also able to spearhead programming and fundraising for activities, including Drew’s annual Black History Month and HBCU night event. This event included an exclusive Q & A with Mr. Charles Black, a famous civil rights icon. Through my work as Presidency, I was able to meet with him and present him with a gift for his time spent with the club.
Inspired by Drew's former physics teacher who was an avid beekeeper himself, the Beekeeping club was started to teach Drew students about the essentials of beekeeping. As the clubs treasurer since the 9th grade, I was able to manage and secure a $5,000 grant to maintain our three on campus hives. I helped our sponsor order bees, create, and purchase more equipment for the hives. As of this year, we were able to start marketing to sell the honey obtained from our hives.
I have been a member of the National Beta Club since 6th grade. Following our motto "to lead by serving others," I have participated in many community serving projects that were held around my school and community. These projects included writing letters to Army veterans, organizing teachers appreciation events, and creating shoe boxes full of supplies for displaced people in need. Beta hosts an annual convention each year with competitions against other chapters around Georgia. The picture from the left is from my sophomore year with the view of Savannah in the background. I competed in both living literature, history, and service learning projects were I was inspired to showcase my skills along with others while having a fun experience.
National Honor Society is an organization that becomes available to juniors and seniors who want the opportunities to elevate their school's commitment to scholarship, leadership, and character. I was inducted into this program last year and was able to receive many community service opportunities as well as a place to share opinions with other leaders in my school.
The National Society for High School Scholars is an organization that allows leaders in the community to come together to receive opportunities for scholarship, leadership, and collaboration. Last year I was able to attend their Atlanta convention and meet fellow leaders from around the United States, we got exclusive access to ACT & SAT prep seminars, college prep advice, and opportunities to have engaging conversations with other scholars. Being apart of this outside program has given me plenty of opportunity to go outside my comfort zone to explore new things while working independently.
