Growing up, I was always a quiet, introspective kid. I didn’t exactly struggle with fitting in, but I certainly never went out of my way to stand out. It wasn’t until I entered a small public school called Drew that I started to understand the true value of community and how it can slowly, but surely, pull someone out of their shell. The experience of being in a tight-knit environment, where everyone knows each other’s names, has shaped the way I view relationships, personal growth, and my own identity. In my introverted beginnings I remember the first day at my small public school as if it were yesterday. The school itself wasn’t much to look at—just a modest building with a few classrooms and a gymnasium that had seen better days. But what struck me more than anything was how small it felt. The whole school had fewer than 200 students, and everyone knew everyone else. At first, that felt comforting, but it was also daunting. My first school experience was at Drew so, here, being immediately thrust into a community where my presence mattered was strange.
I wasn’t a particularly shy child in terms of being nervous in social situations—I was simply quiet. I preferred to observe rather than participate, to blend into the background rather than be noticed. I was the kid who would stand at the edge of the playground, watching the others play, wondering how they had the confidence to throw themselves into the chaos of social interaction. Every time I tried to make conversation or join in, I felt a little awkward, like I didn’t quite belong.
At Drew,c this tendency to keep to myself became more pronounced. It was hard not to feel self-conscious when everyone else was so tightly connected. The idea of striking up a conversation with someone I didn’t know was intimidating, and the thought of opening up in front of a group was absolutely terrifying. But how could I?

In a small school, everyone is forced into close quarters, and it’s hard not to get to know someone over time.
