DRIVING QUESTION
How can understanding the achievements and cultural legacies of ancient civilizations help us appreciate and preserve the diverse cultures that shape our world today?
Understanding the achievements and cultural legacies of ancient civilizations helps us see how different ideas, inventions, and traditions from the past still affect our lives today. For example, things like democracy from ancient Greece, writing from Mesopotamia, or architecture from Rome are still used or admired around the world. When we learn about these past cultures, we begin to respect how people lived and thought differently, which helps us appreciate the many cultures that exist now. It also shows us the importance of keeping these cultures alive by protecting their traditions, stories, and places, so future generations can learn from them too.
For my World History aspect with Ms. Cain, we were asked to be hands on and build structures within every civilization including Ancient China, Ancient Egypt, Ancient India, Ancient Mesopotamia, Classical Greece, Classical Rome, Ghana Empire, Mali and Songhai. We made these structures by using bamboo sticks, tape, rope and many other materials.
For my Geometry aspect with Mrs. Wilson, we were asked to get in group and research a specific civilization and focus on their landscape and architecture that defines the civilization. While doing this we had to answer the following questions including How did ancient civilizations use geometric principles to design their architectural structures? What are some examples of geometric shapes commonly found in ancient architecture? How did ancient civilizations incorporate symmetry and proportion in their architectural designs? How did the use of geometry contribute to the stability and durability of ancient structures? How did ancient civilizations utilize geometric patterns and motifs in their architectural decorations? How did ancient architects use geometry to create optical illusions or enhance the visual appeal of their structures? What mathematical concepts or formulas were employed by ancient civilizations in their architectural designs? How did the understanding of geometry impact the construction techniques used by ancient civilizations? How did the use of geometry in ancient architecture reflect the cultural and religious beliefs of those civilizations? What are some notable examples of ancient architectural structures that showcase the application of geometric principles?
