During the early elementary grades, ALL students in grades K-2 participate in a program called Investigations. Student learning is enriched by providing exposure to and experiences with thinking skills embedded in the curriculum, thereby allowing the Enrichment Specialist the ability to nurture advanced thinking and develop academic talent potential. Targeted opportunities for rich learning experiences and opportunities to extend their learning are provided through a balance of whole group and/or small group lessons.

Students who are identified as Academically and/or Intellectually Gifted (AIG) or those who show evidence of needing nurturing will receive services from the AIG Specialist and/or one of the grade level AIG teachers. The groups at Southwest are fluid and flexible which means we may move students to other classes to best meet their individual needs.
Durham Public Schools recognizes that students learn in many ways, and at a variety of levels. Advanced and/or Intellectually Gifted (AIG) students will find rigorous instruction that challenge and develop their unique gifts and learning styles.
The AIG programs in DPS begin with assessments in March of Second grade and continue through Senior year. Students will be assessed using nationally normed aptitude and achievement tests, with support through a portfolio of artifacts when needed.
