Hi! I'm Laura!
I began my DPS career teaching middle school ELA in 1998. I also have served as a media coordinator and BT Mentor. I truly believe that education is a liberating force, a great social equalizer. I value our students and believe in them. As an educator, I never stop growing personally and professionally, and I enjoy working with the generous, hard-working adults that gravitate toward this profession.
I live with my husband, our dog, and two rowdy kitties right here in my hometown of Durham. For fun, we play board games and video games, binge-watch our fave shows, and chat with friends under the twinkly lights on our deck. We're slowly but surely fixing up our 1930 farmhouse. I am an avid reader and enjoy crafty projects.
My Bull City roots are strong. My great-grandparents and grandparents hailed from Durham. My grandmother attended grades 1-12 at Bragtown School, where she met my grandfather in 1936.
Decades later, I also would attend Bragtown, which was by then a 6th grade center for most of Durham. I also attended Holt, Chewning, and Northern. After earning my Bachelor's Degree in English Education from UNCG, I came back to my hometown and began teaching in DPS. I graduated summa cum laude with a Master's Degree in Library Science from NCCU.
As a life-long Durhamite and a product of DPS, I am proud to serve our vibrant, diverse, culturally rich community.
I am excited to learn more about you. I look forward to getting to know you this year!
