Southmoor 3rd Grade
We are a team of educators who are passionate about personalizing learning for each of our unique students. We do this through setting goals with students using their data, giving students choice in the work they produce and the style in which they work, and engaging our students in meaningful projects that employ critical thinking skills and creativity.
Laura Hagon- 3rd Grade Math/Science
After graduating in 2014 with a Master's Degree in Elementary Education from Florida State University, I moved away from my home state of Florida to the fabulous city of Denver to pursue a teaching career. I was excited to be in a state that makes education a priority and holds both students and educators to a high standard. I taught 6th grade math at a Title 1 charter school for my first two years in Denver but my heart was at the elementary level. I am overjoyed to be starting my third year at Southmoor, teaching 3rd grade math and science. I hope to share my love of mathematics with all of my students this year and help every student feel confident and successful in their mathematical abilities.
Outside of school, I can be found singing/songwriting, spending time with my two cats, hiking and skiing in the mountains, or just spending time relaxing with friends and family. I look forward to getting to know all of my students and Southmoor families this year!
Wanda Matt- 3rd Grade Literacy/Social Studies and 3rd Grade Team Lead
I’m originally from Lead, South Dakota and graduated in 1993 from Black Hills State University with my Bachelor's Degree in Elementary and Special Education. In 2003, I graduated from Marshall University with my Master's Degree in Educational Leadership. This will be my 24th year working in education. I have taught Kindergarten, First Grade, Third grade, Fourth grade, Eighth Grade and High School and have lived and worked in South Dakota, New Mexico, Las Vegas, West Virginia and Montana.
I am married to a geologist and have 1 amazing dog, that we adopted last year from Dumb Friends League, along with our 2 adorable cats. My teaching philosophy is student-centered and I believe in providing students with many collaborative, challenging and exploratory experiences. Such experiences will be informative as well as enjoyable for the students. My goal is to use a variety of teaching strategies that will tend to all learning styles throughout the school year. I hope for this year to be a great learning experience for your child!
Alice Bauer- 3rd Grade Literacy/Social Studies and HGT Literacy/Social Studies & HGT Team Lead
A Rutgers and SMU graduate, I am originally from New Jersey. After living in Oregon, Iowa and Texas, we settled in Colorado and I don't think I will ever leave! I have been teaching for 20+ years and this is my 3rd year at Southmoor Elementary. (11 years as a parent!) Prior to coming to Southmoor, I taught in the History Department at Metropolitan State University of Denver and at The Pingry School in New Jersey where I taught 7-12th grades. As an empath myself, I understand the social-emotional needs of gifted students across the board, as well as what makes them tick academically. I think compassion, patience and understanding are the key to helping students succeed. I believe students learn best through experience, hands-on activities, and through interactions with their peers.
When I am not busy teaching, I enjoy raising my three lovely daughters alongside my husband Scott. I also enjoy traveling, hiking, theater, cooking, reading, and music. I play the piano and the harp, and I play percussion in an all-women rock band!
