Band Classes

Beginning Band - Never played an instrument? No problem! This class is for you. Beginning Band provides the opportunity to develop and improve music literacy skills (music reading and comprehension) as well as instrumental skills without having any prior musical experience. This is a beginner level band which includes the basic elements of music playing skills. Students will perform as an ensemble, and will learn how to play band pieces from a variety of styles and genres. Most beginning band students are learning to play their first musical instrument. Students can choose from the following: Flute, Clarinet, Saxophone, Bass Clarinet, Trumpet, Trombone, Tuba. Students choosing percussion will start on mallet instruments (bells, xylophone) during the first semester and snare/bass will be introduced later.

Concert Band - Already have a year of band under your belt? The Concert Band is perfect for 7th and 8th grade students who have played an instrument before. Students will continue to improve their music literacy skills, and will also perform pieces of music from a variety of styles and genres at a more advanced level than the Beginning Band. More instruments are available in Concert Band, including oboe, bassoon, and French horn.

Jazz Band - The Jazz Band consists of advanced instrumental musicians interested in learning to perform and improvise in the jazz style. Students are required to audition or be recommended by a teacher to be placed in this class. The Jazz Band is welcoming to instruments that are not typical to a concert band including piano, drum set, electric guitar and bass. Jazz Band provides students an opportunity to incorporate advanced skills learned through a variety of performances. Students perform various styles of jazz ensemble literature including swing, rock, Latin and funk, while also learning about the historical context and social influences of the jazz style as an American art form. All students will learn how to improvise on their instruments and will have plenty of opportunities to improvise in class and during performances.

*All band and orchestra classes are a year long. Students interested in jazz band must also be enrolled in another music course.
