Argumentative Essay

Argumentative Essay

Choose a controversial topic of current relevance (social, moral, political, religious) and write an argumentative opinion piece using one of the structures we've looked at in class (classic, Rogerian, or Toulmin). Choose something you care about, otherwise this assignment might become a bit frustrating. Make sure that your problem is narrow in scope, as a more broad topic will be difficult to fit into the limited page count and may lead to generalizations. Also, be sure to include a detailed explanation of both sides of the argument; a one-sided essay will do little to build your ethos. Your essay should include:

  • A description of the problem/controversy
  • An unbiased explanation of both sides (or multiple sides) of the issue
  • A logical, well-researched, factually-based argument about which side you believe is correct (or what compromise might be the best solution)
  • An acknowledgement of the leading counterargument to your argument
  • Any qualifiers your argument needs in order function as an effective solution
  • At least three sources (cite using MLA format) and a Works Cited page (this will not be counted as part of your total page count)
  • 3-5 pages in length, following normal style rules (12-point, Times New Roman font, double-spaced)
