Lessons learned through involvement in Wisconsin DECA

Wisconsin DECA empowers members to embrace their individuality and explore diverse career paths in the business world. Through valuable experiences and teamwork, we foster growth, confidence, and adaptability in every member.
When you think about Wisconsin DECA, what comes to mind? Images of competing at the Grand Geneva, volunteering for Trick-or-Can, or working at a School-Based Enterprise may come to mind. Personally, I think a lot about cow print, as seen at the Chapter Opportunity Workshop and on ICDC merch. If I had to pick, I’d say our cow print is what sets Wisconsin DECA apart from other state associations. Aside from being a unique fashion choice, it represents a lot of the things that I’ve learned during my time in Wisconsin DECA.
Lesson #1: Be bold
Cow print is a bold pattern, but I’d say every member of Wisconsin DECA rocks it. At ICDC, we wear it proudly on hats, pins, and fanny packs, a reminder of where home is. I’ve come a long way from the wide-eyed freshman I once was; now, I’m not afraid to speak up and voice ideas. Through joining Leadership Council, I’ve learned to put myself out there and try things outside of my comfort zone. This year, I appeared on a podcast with a couple state officers - something I could never have imagined doing last year.
Whether it’s speaking on a Zoom call, proposing a new initiative to your chapter, or reaching out to someone on LinkedIn, putting yourself out there pays off. Being part of Wisconsin DECA has taught me that, starting with a cow print hat.
Lesson #2: Be multifaceted
Cow print comes in lots of different shapes and colors. It doesn’t fit into a predetermined box - and neither do you. Through Wisconsin DECA, I’ve learned about so many different careers within the business sphere. You don’t need to fit into the corporate image perfectly. I’ve met members excited to combine things that seem unrelated to business, like music or art, with their passion for business. I’ve learned that you don’t need to conform to the typical business path. With Wisconsin DECA, you can explore your niche through community service initiatives like Chalk the Walk or through competitive events like Apparel & Accessories.
Lesson #3: Don’t be afraid to adapt
Unlike rigid, unyielding patterns like stripes or plaid, cow print is adaptable. Its splotches don’t conform to geometric shapes, and that’s what makes it great. Being in Wisconsin DECA has taught me to adapt, just like cow print. Mistakes and changes of plan have taught me to be flexible to overcome challenges. I’ve learned to adapt to small things (tackling unexpected questions in a roleplay) and big things (failed chapter fundraising attempts). Cow print is the perfect problem-solving print.
Overall, there’s many lessons to be learned from Wisconsin DECA and its iconic cow print. When I first joined DECA, I could never have imagined where it would take me. As a senior entering my final year with high school DECA, I’ve learned so much more than just about business during my time here. Thank you, Wisconsin DECA, for being so a-MOO-zing!
