How Elkhorn DECA members are preparing for Districts

Learn how Elkhorn DECA boosts competition confidence with an introductory meeting, practice tests, prep sessions, and mini competitions like the BMCSEA event, helping members feel ready for Districts and beyond.
Every DECA member can relate to feeling uncertain and unprepared when it comes to DECA competition season, but there are a variety of tools that members can use to increase preparedness and confidence when competing!
First things First: spreading the word. How are DECA members supposed to prepare for competition when they don’t know a thing about it? To make sure that chapter members are informed about competition, Elkhorn DECA started the competition season with an initial competition meeting. The meeting consisted of a brief explanation of DECA competitions, what they are, the expectations, and most importantly, how to prepare for competitions. Having an initial competition meeting ensures that members are aware of competitions and any important events, or prep sessions that are coming up.
Besides an initial competition meeting, there is much more your DECA chapter can do to prepare for Districts, and beyond!
Practice Tests
For some, one of the most daunting aspects of competitions is those 100 question exams, but taking practice tests may help to alleviate that fear. Practice tests can offer a bunch of benefits to all DECA competitors, no matter what event cluster they choose to compete under. Practice tests can help a competitor gain familiarity with concepts from their chosen event. Doing a couple of exam questions in your free time can lead to a large improvement in your exam scores.
Preparation Sessions
Preparation sessions are another great way for a DECA chapter to prepare for Districts! Prep sessions are a great way for members to familiarize themselves with all aspects of role plays. Hosting chapter practice sessions lets members build confidence by exploring event performance indicators and expectations. It is also a good way for members to gain confidence and simulate actual competition.
Attending Mini Competitions
A very important aspect of Elkhorn DECA’s competition preparation is attending the BMCSEA Mini DECA Competition at UW Whitewater. This is a highly beneficial event for Elkhorn DECA’s members. At the Mini Competition, every competitor gets a chance to do an individual role play, a partner role play, and an exam. The Mini Competition is a low-pressure, low-stakes competition, but truly is an experience that can show members what to expect, and what is expected of them, at DECA competitions. Additionally, this competition gives members the opportunity to experiment with different events and event clusters, so by the time Districts come around, members are prepared, content, and confident with their chosen event!
Obviously, there are quite a few more preparation resources out there, but above are just a few that Elkhorn DECA uses to prepare its members for Districts. In the end, preparation of any kind can help you feel more confident and composed for competitions. Best wishes on your competition journey!
