The Broader Benefits of DECA to All Students

DECA is more than just a business organization—it's a place to discover new interests, develop essential skills, and make a real impact through competition and community service. Whether you're into sports, fashion, or volunteering, DECA has something for everyone.
“So, what is DECA?” is a question I’ve received countless times. As the VP of Chapter Development for my school’s chapter, my job revolves around member recruitment, so I’ve thought about this question many, many times. My quick answer is that DECA is a community service and business organization where you can volunteer around the community and learn about business through competitions. Oftentimes, though, students will tell me that they’re not interested in business or that they already have enough volunteer hours. However, DECA is so much more than a only business or volunteering organization.
From an outside perspective, it can seem that DECA only applies within the business sector, focusing on marketing, finance, hospitality, and management. In reality, DECA is so much more than these four subjects. Although competitive events revolve around these principles, they fill niches for any interest. Sports? Sports & Entertainment Marketing. Fashion? Apparel & Accessories. Education? Career Development Project. Still, no matter the event, being part of DECA provides you with a set of universal skills needed for any career, including problem-solving, leadership, and communication. As someone aiming towards an engineering-related career, these skills are just as important in the STEM field as they are in business. They can be applied in any context: the workplace, school, or even in day-to-day life.
Besides competition, DECA provides so many opportunities to become involved in the community. If competing isn’t your style, you can try out initiatives like Trick-or-Can or Color A Smile to have a real impact on the community. These events allow you to meet people you wouldn’t have before and learn about diverse experiences within the area you live in. Community service always has value, and it’s a great way to get out and do something new.
Between competition and community service, DECA has something for everyone. Most importantly, it’s an opportunity to step out of your comfort zone and try something different. No matter the person, I guarantee that DECA has something worthwhile for them. Next time someone asks you, “What is DECA?”, stop before you relegate it to just business. It’s business, community service, and so much more.
