One of North Carolina's social studies educators, Ms. Valencia Abbott, has spent the past three years researching one of the many untold stories of North Carolina and United States history - the U.S. Supreme Court case, Griggs v. Duke Power Co. Valencia is truly "taking action" and using her voice, talents, agency, and community to find the untold stories of American History, share those stories, and preserve them for posterity.
On March 8th, we encourage you to join NCDPI in supporting one of North Carolina's dynamic professional educators as she and the Museum & Archives of Rockingham County tell the story of 13 African American men from Rockingham County who took their fight for civil rights all the way to the United States Supreme Court.

Join the MARC for a brand new exhibition opening, Heavy are the Scales: Griggs v. Duke Power Co. This exhibit tells the story of 13 African American men from Rockingham County that fought for their rights and took it all the way to the Supreme Court in 1971. Their courage to risk everything changed the Civil Rights Movement forever, and now the MARC is honoring the 13 men and their families on the 50th anniversary of this previously little-known Supreme Court case.
