K-12 Standards, Curriculum, & Instruction
SC&I Division Organization
The primary purpose of the K-12 Standards, Curriculum, and Instruction Division is to serve as the authoritative source for the review, revision, and support for implementation of state content standards in the North Carolina Standard Course of Study in the areas of Arts Education (Dance, Music, Theatre Arts, and Visual Arts), English Language Arts, English Language Development, Guidance, Healthful Living (Health and Physical Education), Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, and World Languages.
The Division additionally supports multiple legislative and grant-related programs, initiatives, and reporting requirements, related to the federal Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA); Title III, Part A (English Language Acquisition); Title V (Sexual Risk Avoidance); CDC Physical Activity, Physical Education, Nutrition, and Chronic Disease Management; Specialized Instructional Support Personnel; and state legislative and policy requirements related to areas such as Character Education, English Learners, Global Education, Healthy Active Children, Middle School Athletics, and STEM.
The Division provides leadership for equity and access to support and tools for standards and program implementation, collaboration and engagement with internal and external stakeholders, (including cross-area work groups around materials adoption/alignment, assessments, district and regional support), and professional learning and support for grades K-12 in order to realize the State Board of Education vision that every public school student in North Carolina will be empowered to accept academic challenges, prepared to pursue their chosen path after graduating high school, and encouraged to become lifelong learners with the capacity to engage in a globally-collaborative society. The Division is organized in four primary sections, as illustrated on the left.

New NCDPI Website
The new NCDPI website went live on Thursday, Dec. 5, 2019, at 6 p.m. The new site replaces the NC Public Schools website (http://www.ncpublicschools.org/). Anyone accessing the previous website will be redirected to the new site’s URL: https://dpi.nc.gov/. Read more about how to access information and resources from SC&I.

The North Carolina Department of Public Instruction (NCDPI)'s supplemental sites are intended to be a resource for educators, administrators, institutions of higher education, and other interested parties. These sites contain links to standards, instructional tools, professional development, and other resources related to implementing the NC Standard Course of Study, as well as related areas and initiatives supported in the K-12 Standards, Curriculum, and Instruction Division and NCDPI.

Public Announcement: K-12 Social Studies Standards Revision
The Draft 1 Standards public review took place from January 13, 2019 - February 15, 2020. The external writing and review teams will utilize survey data, focus group data, and other stakeholder feedback from this review to make changes for draft two. The public feedback survey for Draft 2 opened on April 7, 2020 and will close on April 27, 2020. Each course, kindergarten through high school, has its own individual survey. The feedback provided from these surveys will be used in conjunction with input from teachers and social studies specialists from North Carolina Public Schools to create Draft 3 of the standards.
