About GoOpenNC

• To develop an OER community of practice, where NC educators can curate, create, and collaborate on openly-licensed instructional resources that are aligned to NC standards.
• To grow a repository of high-quality, standards-aligned OER, with a focus on instructional improvement.
• To help NC educators grow professionally as they learn about intellectual property, copyright, open-licensing, deep knowledge of standards, and indicators of effective instructional materials.
• To empower collaboration and partnerships among educators, schools, districts, and states.

The GoOpenNC icon can be found on an NC educator's NCEdCloud dashboard. This means that the GoOpenNC platform is integrated with the NC single-sign-on service.

Search for resources by content area, standard, grade level/range, keyword, etc.

Curate resources using the functionality of the platform that allows users to save resources to folders and into group shared folders.

Create resources using the Open Author tool in the platform. Users can co-author resources with other NC educators.

Remix authored OER to enhance and/or improve instructional resources. Remixed resources are connected to the original resource, so users can see all iterations.

Collaborate and connect with colleagues through groups, hubs, co-authoring, and more!

Learn through professional learning OER available on the platform, as well as through collaborative efforts with colleagues. Explore the OER PD hub for self-directed learning.

The GoOpenNC community will be empowered to review, evaluate, and provide feedback for OER in the platform. Additionally, the GoOpenNC community will be able to remix OER to enhance and improve resources.

There are also embedded features and functionality of the platform that will support quality assurance, locating high-quality resources, and continuous improvement of resources.

• Collections- State/district collections of materials serve like “bookshelves” in a library, containing content with a focus (e.g. Standard, topic, keyword, etc.)
• Hubs – a “wing” of the library that is organized around a topic, district, etc. For example, a district hub that enables hub admin to highlight content, collections, create and link groups, as well as include professional learning, videos, messages, and other content options. Other hubs might focus on a specific content area or topic, like social/emotional learning, Global Education, science, or project-based-learning, for example.
• Groups- a group can be created by any user, and can be closed or open to all users. This provides opportunities for communities of practice to curate, co-author, discuss, and share OER. Some districts are strategically designing groups, at least initially, for users to co-author content before publishing to the platform, and are having instructional coaches support this curriculum development.
• Tags- tags/keywords also provide opportunities to highlight high-quality content.
• Endorsements- functionality exists in the platform for the state and district platform administrators to “endorse” instructional materials in the site.
• Ratings and comments- Logged-in users can rate materials using the star rating and can also leave comments.
• Evaluation- Logged-in users can use the embedded evaluation rubric to evaluate resources. The NC Quality Review Tools rubric identifies 12 indicators of quality.
• Ability to flag resources- Users can“flag” resources that are outdated, inaccurate, include broken link, not accurately aligned to standards, etc.
• An OER community of practice provides opportunities for educators to make quality improvements to resources. This is a primary benefit of content that is openly-licensed, as other users can reuse/revise/remix/redistribute content. The functionality of the platform enables user to remix openly-licensed authored content, where a teacher can take a resource and make instructional improvements and/or additional content, strategies, activities, etc. When viewing a remix of an authored resource, users will also be able to access all versions, including the originally-authored resource.
• Functionality exists to highlight featured and “super users,” which can serve as models for educators.
• Future enhancement ideas for the platform include micro-credentialing for contributing to the community and social features that would allow users to follow other users and be notified of new content.

Yes! Thousands of resources have been imported (from NCLOR/Schoolnet).

Additionally, hundreds of educators have been engaged in GoOpenNC professional learning that included authoring, remixing, and evaluating resources.
