Purpose:
In shared writing the teacher and the students collaborate to compose and co-construct a text.
The student's role is to offer ideas and suggestions, and listen to the teacher as he/she makes decisions using his/her knowledge as a proficient writer. While considering and responding to these ideas, the teacher takes responsibility for recording the writing on a large piece of paper, board or screen and negotiating with the students which ideas will be incorporated into the text.
The teacher guides the discussion in an attempt to craft a well-structured, meaningful and effective piece of writing with the students.
Organisation
The teacher takes responsibility for the recording of the new text, selecting suggestions offered by the students to guide the crafting of the text.
Teacher holds the pen and acts as a scribe.
Teacher responds to the writing ideas generated by the students.
Teacher and students share the planning and decision-making needed to construct the text.
This is a collaborative process between students, and teacher and students. The teacher assumes more than an equal role in which he/she enables students to develop and organise ideas.
Teacher provides guidance and the student's discussion contributes to a growing awareness and understanding of the purpose, process or features of writing.
