Student Reflection
The scripture passage I chose is Luke 2:1-5, ‘The Journey to Bethlehem’. My artwork shows Mary and Joseph travelling the long road to Bethlehem before the birth of Jesus. The subject matter highlights the difficulty and sacrifice of their journey, while also emphasising Joseph’s responsibility and courage in guiding his family safely.
This story connects with me personally because it reminds me of my own family and how parents work hard to protect and care for their children, even during challenging times. It also relates to my culture, where family support and sacrifice are deeply valued.
Spiritually, this passage strengthens my faith by reminding me that Jesus’ life began in simple and difficult circumstances, yet God was present throughout. It helps me reflect on Joseph’s determination and Mary’s trust in God, inspiring me to show gratitude in my own prayers and daily life.
Artistically, my piece is original. I wanted to create an image of Joseph’s burden, adapting this theme onto paper. I used black and dark brown watercolour pencils, blending with a water pen to create depth and shadow. For the background, I dabbed blue and white paint with scrunched newspaper to add texture, capturing both hardship and faith.
