Dr. Justin A. Frederick, DrPH, MPH, CPH, serves as the Deputy Health Director and Chief of Epidemiology and Preparedness at the Douglas County Health Department in Omaha, Nebraska. In this role, he provides executive oversight of a broad public health portfolio, including infectious disease epidemiology, emergency response, health data, lead prevention, and administration and finance, collectively managing an operational portfolio of approximately $50 million.
Dr. Frederick earned his Bachelor of Science from Northwest Missouri State University in 2003 and his Master of Public Health in Administration from the University of Nebraska Medical Center College of Public Health in 2011. He recently completed his Doctor of Public Health (DrPH) with a concentration in Emergency Preparedness, where his work focused on developing a comprehensive Community Reception Center (CRC) plan for radiological emergencies. This plan has received recognition and engagement at the local, state, and national levels and is positioned as a scalable model for public health systems nationwide.
A nationally recognized public health leader, Dr. Frederick holds the Certified in Public Health (CPH) credential from the National Board of Public Health Examiners and is a member of the Delta Omega Honorary Society in Public Health. He has contributed to the advancement of the field as a content expert for the CPH examination through national job task analyses and serves as a site visitor for the Council on Education for Public Health (CEPH).
With more than 20 years of experience in public health practice, Dr. Frederick has developed deep expertise in infectious disease epidemiology, emerging threats, and emergency preparedness and response. His leadership has been instrumental in strengthening community readiness for complex public health emergencies. His work has also led to engagement in global response efforts, including an invitation to participate in the World Health Organization's Global Outbreak Alert and Response Network (GOARN).
My public health interests encompass a wide range of crucial areas. I have a particular passion for emerging infectious diseases and epidemiology, dedicating my efforts to understanding and addressing evolving health threats. Additionally, I actively engage in outbreak response and the management of public health emergencies, aiming to minimize their impact on communities.
With a deep concern for the effects of global warming on public health, I advocate for sustainable and climate-resilient strategies. Vector-borne diseases, influenced by environmental factors, also captivate my interest.
I am dedicated to promoting disease prevention and mitigation strategies, recognizing the importance of proactive measures in reducing the burden of illness on individuals and communities. Moreover, I actively contribute to global responses to public health challenges, collaborating on a global scale.
Public health education holds a significant place in my pursuits, as I firmly believe in empowering individuals and communities with knowledge and skills to make informed health decisions. My overarching objective is to contribute to the advancement of public health, utilizing evidence-based practices and innovative approaches to improve population health outcomes.
