Gaining employment in the industry is a challenge, least of all in a mainstream production company. Breaking into the film industry requires a combination of passion, networking, and a proactive attitude. Your contracts can range from 6-8 months or 12-18 months depending on the production and the role. You will also be required to sign a NDA form which is a non- disclosure agreement which is a legal contract that protects the confidentiality of what is being filmed and discussed on set, this means you can't discuss the filming or leak spoilers to anyone. Even after your contract is up, you'll have to start the job searching again, but this time with credentials, contacts and networking which will have helped you progress in the field.
Start with entry level roles: Many successful film professionals begin as Production Assistants (PAs) or trainees to gain valuable on set experience.
Gain experience: Volunteer for independent films, student projects, or local theatre productions to build your skills and CV.
Network effectively: Attend film festivals and industry events, and join professional organisations. Reach out to people working in your desired field on platforms like LinkedIn.
Tailor your application: Research the company and specific job role to customise your CV and cover letter. Show how your skills align with their needs and what you can contribute.
Build a strong portfolio: Create a website or online portfolio to showcase your best work, whether it's a short film, script samples, or a video editing reel.
Be persistent: Landing a job in the competitive film industry often takes time and effort. Stay motivated and continue to hone your craft while applying for new opportunities
